We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Melissa, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My niece, who was an infant at the time, was struggling with eczema. Her mom had exhausted several medical and over the counter options to attempt to resolve my nieces skin problems with no avail. It was hurtful to see her surfer with something I knew there should be relief for. We just hadn’t found the answer yet. I started to research remedies for eczema and thats how everything really unfolded. Over time, we noticed that my niece started to have fewer flare ups and longer lasting moisture. People started to ask my sister how she managed my niece’s eczema and then people would ask me to make them products to try. The results were amazing. They started to tell others and before I knew it, a simple effort to help my niece grew into the business now known as Cherry’s Body Shoppe. In the medical world, we use something called ‘evidence-based practice’. It is where you use evidence-based techniques and practices to get the best outcome for patients. I used this same approach when researching, formulating, and finalizing my products for my customers. When I first began producing on a larger scale, I didn’t want to just ‘whip’ up something, I wanted to use research-backed ingredients to give my clients the best that their skin deserves.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
In 2013, I became a Registered Nurse. My passion has always been to help others live a life of fullness, health and love. This same passion is what inspired me to share Cherry’s Body Shoppe with others. I later went on to pursue my bachelor’s degree and began to travel as a Nurse. The possibilities in my profession are endless but my desire to more accomplish more within my scope was through more education. In 2018, began to pursue my master’s degree in Family Practice as a Nurse Practitioner. 2018 was also the year I launched Cherry’s Body Shoppe. Learning more about dermatological disorders during my time pursuing my master’s, ignited my passion for Cherry’s Body Shoppe even more. My biggest challenge came in 2020 when the pandemic started. It changed everything for me academically and personally, I lost my father and grandfather 11 days apart, just a few weeks before finals and our required exit exams. I never imagined not being able to share that moment with my father or even not being to walk across the stage to receive my degree but 2020 changed everything for us all. It was God and the support of my family that got me through those last few weeks of school. Now as a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner and an entrepreneur, my days are filled with helping others live their best lives in their best health and skin.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would probably start the day out with brunch at the Original House of Pancakes. Later that day we would swing my Sophia’s for mani/pedi’s. The next day would definitely be the perfect time for shopping so Northpark would be our next stop and we could finish our evening by grabbing a bite from Street’s Fine Chicken. Another day would be filled with exploring downtown. There is so much do but my first stop would be the AT & T Discovery District, its the perfect place for families, friends, couples, food and fun. We would also take a trip to view the skyline . For the last day, I would suggest a trip to North Dallas for more shopping at Allen outlets and a little Top Golf.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has been my biggest inspiration. When I first started to create my products. I was somewhat insecure about sharing my creation with people outside of my immediate family. I even started to diminish something that my family had grown to live by. I’m not sure why I thought people outside my immediate family would be any different. They believed in my product and my capability even when I did not initially. They more than encouraged me through the process of finalizing formulas and branding before I initially launched. This business was inspired and driven by them and it still is.
