We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maya, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
You must keep going. Failure is not something you can avoid and it is not something you should hide from it! You have an assignment on this Earth and we all have to see it through. I would say to never give up and if something is not working gain a new perspective and try again. It is imperative that you keep going!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My Art is a representation of the human experience through my own experience as a black woman. In society certain topics may be taboo but my art questions that. I paint about death, anxiety, depression, and oppression. I make this Art because I want the person who may not feel seen to be seen and be heard. I want them to know that they are not alone and that what they feel is real and I hope to heal with you and connect with you.
I am still on this constant journey to success and it has not been easy but, the people I meet and talk to make it all worth it. Making someone feel closer to someone else because they are moved by my art is my only reason. My brand represents the balance of life; the beauty with the pain. I want that to be a reflection of me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I were to have a friend come to Atlanta to visit we would be doing a festival of some sort because it’s the summer time and ATL has a festival for everything. We would go to a few restaurants maybe tour the betline because it’s a little experience all in one place, have a picnic at the park and just adventure and vibe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout goes to my Mother, Dad, Brother, Son, and my Dream Team! My family and friends mean the world to me and I couldn’t be on this road to success without them and their support. They are truly my village and they show up for me every time. They make me stronger and motivate me to have success so I can share it with them.
