We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
I hope my legacy is one of perspective. I try not to think of my work as capturing video so much as curating stories. In the end, even if the work is forgotten, I’ve always wished there would be a lasting impact. What can I show you that you’ve never seen before? Who can I introduce to you that might have never crossed your mind? Having those moments of discovery drives us forward. If my work has contributed to that momentum at all, I’d be happy with that legacy.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to describe my approach to filmmaking as “Human First.” There’s nothing more dynamic, varied and interesting on Earth than people, and we should celebrate that. Whether you’re doing a deep dive documentary or promoting the latest gadget, if you don’t connect on a basic level you’re just adding more noise. With that in mind I look to learn, collaborate and synthesize concepts into emotions. By bringing the humanity of the moment to center stage, I think we can communicate more meaningfully.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I feel lucky to call Cincinnati, Ohio, home. For a lot of people we’re “fly over country,” so they never get to take in the unique aspects of the area. Our Arts scene has been thriving from fancy theaters to dive bars for decades. We have museums covering any medium and any era at any given time. Our local chefs bring a ton of variety to town and even a casual stroll downtown will walk you past an architectural gem within minutes. If you like sports, we’ve got that too and can even offer you a team base on how much you like an underdog verse a champion. Our parks are plentiful and you can find hundreds of miles of hiking trails that will let you forget about the city without ever really leaving. If your layover at CVG ever gets extended, I’d encourage anyone shake off that cliché and spend some time exploring.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been given plenty of great advice in every aspect of my business over the years. But there’s no better support than knowing work is worth balancing with life. My wife not only encourages my career, she also gives the day to day meaning. If it weren’t for her support I’d still be working a 9 to 5 telling myself “someday I’ll give it a shot.”
