We had the good fortune of connecting with Mark Madden and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mark, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I decided to start my own business for a few reasons. First, I wanted to create an additional stream of income. As the cost of living continues to rise, I feel that this has become imperative. Second, I needed to do something that was fulfilling and rewarding. I’ve always enjoyed fashion so a clothing line was most appropriate. Last, I would like to transition out of corporate america and believe that this new business venture could be my way out.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My professional career of 13 years is boring and totally opposite of my own business, which is another reason why I started Grey Area Brand. It allows me to be creative and have fun while making money. For me, that is the ultimate goal in life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Food: Arnette’s Chop Shop, Le Colonial, Eight Sushi, Roc South Cuisine, Slutty Vegan and Fellini’s.

Nightlife: Republic Lounge and Sivas.

Activities: High Museum, The Battery, and Ponce City Market.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

I’d like to shoutout a few people for encouraging and/or helping me get Grey Area Brand started.
Marie Whitworth, who has been telling me to start a clothing line for over 10 years now. I am not sure what took me so long, but I am super thankful for her encouragement.
Jeremy Haynes, who has helped me with marketing and promoting the business. His help contributed to a successful launch and overall visibility of the brand.
Talik J., who was instrumental in the behind-the-scenes logistics. He shared all his business contacts with me, answered all my questions in regards to starting/maintaining a business, and continues to support in any way possible. His help prevented me from making typical start-up mistakes – saving me a lot of time and money.
In addition, many of my friends have started businesses, which was extremely motivating.
And last but not least, shout-out to everyone who has supported in ANY way. I am humbled and thankful.
