Meet Marie B. | Vintage Dealer and Wardrobe Stylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie B. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marie B., what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to taking risks, my motto is “If not me, then who”. Taking risk is also taking advantage of an opportunity that can lead to greater opportunities. I’m too invested in the game to think about what things could have happened.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My brand Do The Right Vintage relates to 80’s,90’s and early 2000’s hip hop music, Black culture & film. Over the years I collected rare vintage clothing and black artifacts like magazines, books, posters, art work, r&b & hip hop vinyl records etc, by accident! Which now makes me a vintage dealer lol
What sets me apart from the others is that I am a freelance wardrobe stylist. This allows me to use my vintage pieces for styling editorial shoots and using black artifacts as props for creative direction.
What I’m most proud of is working on the set of “Big Fifty ” The Delrhonda Hood Story on BET+, starring Remy Ma and the joy of seeing my pieces come to life on the big screen.
What got me here today was working as a former freelance MUA in NYC and learning the entertainment & fashion industry over the years. Which allowed me to transition smoothly into wardrobe styling. Then suddenly realizing I have a whole collection of vintage pieces that are rare & unique that could be used to style for tv & film and editorial shoots as well as sell online. I had the idea and concept in 2015 but I was kind of lost on how to get it started. I took my time to research and figure out a business plan. I officially started in 2017 and then just kept pushing through.
I have good days and bad days, to be honest I do not like posting online even on my personal page, I’m kind of school lol. But in order to be successful in this day and age you have to have drive, focus, creativity and consistency, which helps bring traffic sales and industry connection. I always have prayers and manifestation behind my grind and that is what brought me where I am today.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I now reside back in the Washington DC area and the city has changed a lot and there are so many places to go and see. So if your coming to the nation’s capital I would invite you out to visit the National Museum of African American History because we have to #RESPECTTHECULTURE and after that let’s get something to eat. You know DC has the Best Brunch spots right. Even Nas said it in his song “Brunch On Sunday’s’ ‘ lol.
There’s so much to choose from you have Founding Farmers, Ted’s Bulletin, Provision No.14, Bar Code, Creole on 14th, Lost Society, Kitsuen, Kitchen Kray … I can go on and on. When the weather’s nice I love to go to the District Wharf which is a waterfront with a lot of nice restaurants, rooftop bars like 12 Stories, La Vie, Whisky Charlie and for a cute Happy Hour during the week is The Point DC which overlooks the water.
Now that I’m a little older I can’t leave the house after 7 pm lol, but when it comes to nightlife, me and my girls we like to do dinner at spots like Joe’s Seafood, Truluck’s, Mastro’s, The Capital Grille, Nobu etc and then after that we like to enjoy our time at speakeasy spots and lounges. Some cool spots right now for nightlife in Washington DC are Rosebar, Society Lounge, Opera, Mirror on 9th just to list a few.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a special shout out to my homegirls Tonya R., Dayatra S., Robyn B., Taraji L., Shannetta, Benita S. and Tia Couture. They have been my support system since day one. These ladies have assisted me with shoots, pop up shops etc. Even when I don’t ask for help (because I don’t want to feel like a burden) they still pop out on a sister and help me out. Which is always a great support system to have when you’re running an online business and creating creative content by yourself. Love you ladies !!!
