Meet Marcelina Castro | Creator/Small Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marcelina Castro and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marcelina, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was always a candle fan and purchased them all the time. Once I would find a favorite candle, it would get discontinued, or simply not exist. Many candles would leave me disappointed with poor scent quality once lit. More importantly, when I became a mom, I started to pay attention to the ingredients in my products, including my candles. When I decided to start MiGi, my kids were my motivation to select top ingredients that were non toxic and mommy approved.
Starting my own business allowed me to create and share products that I personally love and believe in. Each products is hand poured and created for moms like me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There are a lot of candle makers out there. I personally love the ability to create a candle blend can help trigger a happy moment from a place, a loved one or a cherished memory. My family has always been my motivation and encouragement along the way as MiGi has grown. I have had to make many sacrifices but it has always been worth it. I have had the support of my husband who has been by my side each step of the way. I have learned that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others. It was been such an amazing ride and I have learned that when you encourage and inspire others, it makes you happier.
Being patient is also not easy but necessary when you have a small business. I love my brand and I love that others love it as well. When you love creating something and you can share that with the world, just take the leap. You may be surprised with the joy and happiness it brings.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to San Francisco and visit the warf and a ferry ride to Sausalito. I would then take them to a golf trip to Monterey peninsula. I would then take them on a drive down highway 1 to visit Carmel. There are so many beaches and sites to see in the Bay Area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband David has truly been my cheerleader and major supporter. My parents and family have also supported us as MiGi has grown into what it is today. Owning a small business in a large community, we have been blessed with many ways to grow and participate in local events. My family, especially my children have enjoyed coming along with us and helping out during our local events. Even when it comes to the smallest detail in my products, my family is consulted such as naming of candles and design detail. MiGi would not be what it is today without their love and support
