We had the good fortune of connecting with Maquita Eaton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maquita, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Consistency and curiosity. Success is pretty subjective but to me success is defined as making an impact and uplifting others. It can take years to make an impact but by being consistent you increase your odds of hitting that target, Curiosity keeps me thinking outside of my limited experiences and allows me to consider others points of view. You can’t uplift or impact people only thinking about yourself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I work fulltime in Sales and I am very proud of that. Getting here was definitely challenging and an unexpected blessing. I like it because I can incorporate my creativity and curiosity. My podcast Chicken, Sex & Degrees is a labor of love with Monica Johnson. It’s something that we truly enjoy doing together. It allows us explore topics that are interesting to us and give a voices to people and things that may not have been discussed in the context in which we discuss it. We have learned that consistency is key. We have also learned that we have a unique voice and audience. We learned we don’t need to make anyone proud except for us and our audience. I want people to know above all else, I am a Lover and my intention is for everything I do to be grounded in Love. Chicken, Sex & Degrees is how Monica and I bucket the most important things in life and the cornerstones of self care–nourishment, pleasure and motivation. CSD is a little bit of everything that means something to us. I am slowly making my way back to acting, it honestly gives me so much energy. I just love connecting with a character and the energy of being on stage.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my bestie is visiting we are definitely going to eat good and have a few cocktails. One of my favorite places to go is Negril. It’s always a vibe and the food is delicious. We’d also have to see a show at the Fox Theater or Tre’s Place in Forest Park. For a chill night of bar hopping and hanging, we would definitely go to Edgewood and see what’s happening and grab something chicken and fish from Harold’s Ice Bar. Saturday Brunch at Ms. Icey’s and then a walk on the beltline, making sure to stop in Ponce for shopping and Krog Street for Jeni’s.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My village gets all of the credit. There is this African philosophy, Ubuntu– “I am because, you are,” which I am a testament of. I am quick to doubt what I am capable of or talk myself out of things but my loved ones are always there to remind who I am and what I am capable of. So special shoutout to those that lift me up and always support me with each of my endeavors. I am already know I will miss some names but I would be remise if I didn’t drop some. My boyfriend Dante Sellers. My business partner Monica Johnson. My siblings Byron Eaton II (America’s Next Top Model), Chimere Eaton, Nigel Jefferson, Gennifer Bivens, Sherritta Eaton, and Kenny Jefferson. Andisha Cooper, Jennifer Mercer, Monica Sharp, NaKaela Feagin-Hooks, Jovanni, Railey, Amy Robinson, Monifa Williams, Ashley Moore, Monique Shaw, My Aunt Pam. And of course, my parents Byron and Carla Eaton.
