We had the good fortune of connecting with Mallory Stephens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mallory, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
There are so many factors that go into the success of a brand, and for us, I think it’s the detail-oriented experience that our clients receive. People that work with Honeycomb are given seemingly endless opportunities to customize their wedding florals. I craft every floral component to suit each individual bride, so you won’t get a standard package deal with our company. From individual flowers, ribbons, vases, even delivery boxes – we will cater it to suit your event. From our first phone call to the initial proposal, from the venue walk through to wedding day, our brides get unlimited contact with us to field questions and updates as they finalize their wedding details. We take on a limited number of weddings each year in order to maintain this level of service with our clients. Design wise, our couples get gorgeous wedding florals that tie their wedding together. I always say that I never want their guests to be distracted by them. They are there to accent the wedding and not take away from the true meaning of the day.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For a long time I looked at floral design as a formula. You use this many stems of that flower, this many bundles of greens, this many fillers, etc. As I move along I have appreciated that it’s ok and encouraged to deviate from the recipe. While it helps while I’m putting together the paper portion of the order, when the stems are in my hands I now allow myself a bit more freedom. I’m a full-time mom in addition to running Honeycomb, so I’m usually forced to go with my gut and just get the work done! Finding the confidence to move along in that manner has been so helpful from moving from a brick-and-mortar florist’s assistant to starting my own business and calling myself a floral designer. I absolutely love and appreciate the trust my clients place in me to make their wedding day unique, elegant, and fun!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love being active outside, so I would recommend getting out to some of the local state parks like Mistletoe State Park, or checking out Phinizy Swamp and Nature Preserve to add some education in. You’ll never take the plant-nerd out of me!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My sister-in-law, mother, and father have been instrumental in my story. Many people haven’t known that my husband has been deployed for the last 9 months and they all stepped up to help with the business and our son. They cut stems, traveled to me during large events, and watched my son so I could keep up with Honeycomb and maintain my sanity!
