We had the good fortune of connecting with Madame Sirena and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Madame, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started my business as a response to my own sensitive skin care needs. I knew that I needed something different than what was available at the stores. I also knew that others were suffering like I was and I needed to help provide a solution for us all. I started with making my own soaps, infused with herb and fruit essences, and it was such a treat for my skin. As I started to understand how lifestyle choices affect us, I began to incorporate even more holistic items and practices into my business. The Boutique has now expanded to offer naturally handcrafted sugar scrubs, body butters, healing herbal oils and washes. This is to respond to the evolving needs of my VIP Clientele.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The Jambalaya Moon is my Ritual Boutique – specializing in Holistic Healing, Lifestyle Pleasure and Luxury. What sets my brand apart is authentic spiritual energy, imported ingredients and the naturally handcrafted items. All Product and Service offerings are aligned with Ancient Deities and cosmic influences. They are housed in several different collections throughout The Jambalaya Moon. I am most excited about my Luxury Conjure Oils, for Body and Ritual use and my Intimate Collection items. The Luxury Conjure Oils (infused with potent herbs, roots and incantations) can be used for spiritual protection, attracting prosperity, enhancing Self-Love and plenty more. The Intimates Collection provides a way for my clients to explore the power of their sensuality through embracing their sexual wellness. This is an empowering practice that we all should experience (smile). Getting to this point of confidence in my brand and myself has come from faith, perseverance and a strong belief in myself. I had to believe in myself when many others doubted. My business came into fruition at a time when “New Age” Spiritualty was not nearly as popular as it is today. This is another reason my brand is so authentic, it wasn’t influenced by the oversaturation of certain trends. I have had to endure naysayers, cyber bullies and the like. However, the love will ALWAYS outshine the hate. If you know you have a purpose, especially a Higher purpose, you can expect plenty of people to doubt you. But now I have learned that having naysayers is a key to success. Why? Because plenty of my clients heard about me from someone trying to discredit or dishonor my name; they came to experience The Jambalaya Moon for themselves and fell in love. I am so grateful because today, my Boutique has become everything I imagined and more. I am looking to provide a Brick-and-Mortar experience to my clients in the near future.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So I’m from PG County, Maryland – this is a unique area within the DMV. If anyone visits, we have the option of going to DC, Maryland or Virginia to enjoy ourselves. So let’s start on a Sunday. I love a bougie Brunch so first we’re hitting Farmers Fishers Bakers in Georgetown, DC and enjoying bottomless mimosas and their delicious food. Depending on the weather, a rooftop party will probably be in close proximity. So that’s a vibe we are definitely going to get into. I also love Old Town, Alexandria for a great Brunch and to walk around and hang out. Throughout the week, we could head to the MGM Grand Casino at the National Harbor on any night. It’s exciting to enjoy gambling, drinking exotic cocktails and meeting new people there. We absolutely have to take some pictures out on the terrace of the casino, perfect views! And I have a secret meditation spot where I visit the water, its tranquil and right on the Potomac River. We would also visit there several times during the week.
We would randomly ride to the city (DC) and find the festivities we’re looking for. For example: after a late night scroll through the H Street Corridor, full of bars and other nighttime venues, we’re heading to U Street to visit Oohs and Aahs – a soul food restaurant that will literally change your life. For our weekend flow, we could head to the Union District Oyster Bar and Lounge or Martini’s to see Backyard Band – Go-Go music is a integral part of DMV Culture and I love it so, we might go to a couple of Go-Go’s throughout the week. My favorite way to spend a Saturday evening would be to go and visit several of my friends, enjoy “party favors” and bless them with gifts from my Jambalaya Moon Boutique. Then of course, getting some great food at Falafel & Fries in Adams Morgan, DC. (If you can’t tell, I’m a foodie!)
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out my grandmother, Celestine Bright. She is the reason that I was inspired to start my business. My grandmother always knew I was “different,” in a good way and encouraged me to embrace it. Her knowledge of herbs, roots and flowers is still with me . The summers I spent with her during my childhood helped to shape me into the passionate, witty, driven and successful woman that I am today. She is a very special Ancestor to me.
