We had the good fortune of connecting with Lucy Boland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lucy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Well, for me it’s been an organic process. It simply started with a strong desire to create. I began by organizing a few grassroots art shows for myself and other local artists, and trying to sell work. With the success of those shows, I realized doing what I love, contributing to my family, and having a platform to put a larger message in the world was a real possibility for me. As mother of young triplets, I knew holding down a traditional “9 to 5” would never really work for me and who I am. I needed something more. The universe seemed to align when a studio space became available just after the kids started kindergarten. It was a huge risk for us at that time, but I dug my heels in and decided to take a chance on myself in a big way. I rented the studio loft space in downtown Spartanburg, SC and began to slowly build my brand through Instagram and personal connections. It really sounds simple as I think through it, but there have been so many things that got me here. I gambled on myself and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I pour my entire self into my work. It’s an authentic blend of art and spirit. Art is what I do and how I process life. As my life evolves and changes – so does my work. I’m a multi-media artist that explores self-reflective themes and women’s work in the world. What this means for my customers and patrons is that they can expect an eclectic body of work with real meaning and connection. And I should probably mention…It’s for sale! Watch me close on social though, it goes fast!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, I’d bring them into the studio to show them the latest collection I’m working on. Then we would pop across the street to the FR8 Yard, for a burger and a beer. We would likely stop by the local bookstore and coffee shop, Hub City Bookshop & Press. After a quick caffeine boost, we’d mosey a block down to see my favorite painting in Spartanburg from the incredible Black Mountain College Collection at the AC Hotel. Then we’d finish the day with happy hour at RJ Rockers Brewery and Dinner at Cribbs Kitchen! Honestly, They should plan on staying the weekend

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Sandra Cannon of Sandra Cannon Interiors. We first connected on a creative project years ago and quickly formed a deep friendship and creative language that is simply divine. She’s been such a cheerleader of me and my work. She is a positively motivating force that inspires me. I think everyone deserves someone like that in their corner. Also Zart Group, who does an incredible job supporting the artist community through print, framing, and so many other ways, has been really good to me. There are simply too many HOMETEAM artists to shoutout but I most recently showed work with Maggie MacDonald and Jonni Bleu and together it was beyond successful. I’m truly just so thankful to be an artist right here, right now, with these people by my side. PINCH ME!
