Meet Lomiekia Messam | Portrait & Lifestyle Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lomiekia Messam and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lomiekia, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
One of my favorite quotes/affirmation is: “What God has for me is for me”. I like this particular quote because every client that I’ve had the privilege of capturing, I believe God has sent to me. I have been fortunate to work with some amazing clients/families. Only a few times i’ve had clients inquire that I haven’t been able to work with (for various reasons), I look at it as if that session/project just wasn’t meant for me or wasn’t meant to be. I realized that in life I don’t/can’t question things like that because I truly believe everything happens for a reason and all things have worked for my good.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have been a professional photographer for quite some time now. But honestly, in the beginning, photography started off as a hobby for me. Years had passed before I realized that I was pretty good at capturing portraits (and getting compliments helped too) I then realized it was something I wanted to do as a career. God has an interesting way of showing you your “gift” even when you’re not looking for it. LOL. Once I started indulging in photography, I learned that the Photography Industry was a male dominate industry (which was intimidating at first) but after studying, reading, taking classes and practicing, I realized that I was just as good as anyone else, regardless of the gender. I take pride in knowing that (as a black female photographer) I have the privilege of displaying my talents, and my art while working & meeting amazing people at the same time. What has set me apart is the fact that each and every day I aim to go to my sessions with confidence and give my all to my clients. My clients and I get to catch up and pour positive energy into each other. I also realized that being a female Photographer has it advantages because my clients are comfortable with me and I believe that is because they know I can relate to them in many ways and tend to any of their emotional needs. My job is more than a photo session, It’s a ministry.
I am where I am today becauseI invested in my Photography Education and I was fortunate to have great mentors. Practicing also helped me alot. To this day, I still make time to practice with my camera. When it comes to Photography, you will never know enough. You’ll never stop learning, there is always something new to learn, research or practice. When I decided to make Photography a career choice I can say that in the beginning it wasn’t easy. It was alot of work and still is alot of work (to maintain a business), especially when you work alone. Hopefully that’ll change soon.lol.
One lesson (that will forever stick with me) that I’ve learned in this industry is that everyone is NOT my ideal client. I learned that It’s not meant for me to service everyone. If you don’t book that client, it’s okay, if you don’t book that event, it’s okay. It goes back to my favorite saying “What God has for me, it is for me”. There has been many times where I thought I had missed out on certain opportunities and then out the blue, God sends me something BETTER. I remind myself daily that If it’s meant to be, it’ll be.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout my support system. I owe who I am and where I am in my career to God, my Husband Steve and my Mother Tara. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to do what I “love” to do. They are my ultimate support system. My support system have guided me, prayed for me and been there for me when I’ve needed them the most. I’m thankful and grateful for them.
