We had the good fortune of connecting with Lex Dye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lex, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I am originally from Detroit, born and raised on the West Side of the city. Detroit feels like a very large small town (haha).

Despite what people say about my city in the news, it is home to so many forms of art and culture and is to this day one of my favorite places in the world. The nature of the city and the prestige and pride of the art made there is definitely something I carry everywhere I go.

My entire family was and is musically inclined and heavily involved in the church scene of Detroit, I have some disagreements with how I was brought up religiously but my love for music began in church. I began performing on the pulpit at the age of 4. It was there that I first learned the value of being able to tap into another person’s soul through music. It is something I strive for to this day in the work that I do.

Being involved in the curation of sound from a young age has really allowed for me to branch out in the way that I use my voice and interact with melodies. It has also made me a huge appreciator of sounds from all different kinds of places.

At the root of what I do, connecting with the world and being able to share myself and my work honestly is the goal. My upbringing facilitated that within me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a self taught producer, mixing engineer, singer/songwriter, and rapper. I think what sets me apart from others is my deep involvement in every aspect of the creative process, even in collaboration with others and my insistence on taking inspiration from any place that hits.

For me creating music really feels like breathing, it was really frustrating when I first started because I had so much energy and not really a way to communicate it. But with time, effort, commitment, and encouragement from key people in my life I’ve gotten to a point where I can create high quality music that I am proud to call my own.

I make music that can be felt because at the end of the day it is me. I pour my everything into what I create and it shows.

It’s nice that people listen to my stuff and I push for that in order to make a living. However, even if no one bumped a single track I’ve made or collaborated on, I know deep down that its heat and deserves to be listened to intently.

I just want people to hear me for who I am and act accordingly.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Alright so if I was in Detroit, we would immediately go to coney island and get a grilled chicken pita as well as some saganki (flaming cheese) I don’t care if we gotta hop spots to do it.

After that we would hit up Belle isle for a beautiful day on the beaches near the river or we could just chill under some willow trees and smoke a blunt.

Then, for the evening we would hit up one of my favorite Nightclubs, Marble Bar for some fire ass techno/house music and drinks before turning in.

In Seattle, we would go for a walk through Volunteer Park, visit Bruce Lee’s grave cause he’s a goat. Grab a seattle dog from the nearest stand and then head over to Alki Beach for some fire and good conversations, and of course great West Coast weed.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely want to give a shoutout to Kay Kaution, a local Detroit producer who has constantly pushed me as an artist. He and I were making garbage beats together in middle school. Since then he has always been someone I consider a trusted ally in my journey as an artist.

Also want to shoutout the Seattle visual and spoken word artist Nakema Jones. Since I’ve touched down in the city she has been a heavy motivator and friend. As well as someone who hasn’t hesitated to throw me in the ring when it comes to performing live and I appreciate the growth she has pulled out of me. She works really hard to make sure artists have space to express themselves in this world that is often stifling for young artists.

Another dope up and coming artist who pushes me forward is Persephone, an amazing tech house producer/DJ whose EP I am currently waiting on. Her dedication to her craft and understanding of musicality is something that has me continually learning.
