We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Saenz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leslie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
It has always been my purpose. It wasn’t until more recently that I found the vigor to fulfill my dream. Any other work avenues I attempted to take always lead me back to creativity. My art is an extension of me. I live by the saying “Carpe Diem” (Seize the day)for a reason. After a period of great loss it was time to pursue what was always true in my heart.

My journey to officially pursue art professionally was a slow burn. I loved being creative and enjoyed doing some projects here and there. In the beginning of this year it was as if a switch turned in my head and I decided to do what I always felt was right.
Being a second generation American has been deeply impactful to my life. You want to show your family that their sacrifices were worth the journey for a better life. Being an Artist is far from what is traditional but it’s true to who I am. I am so proud to be a female Mexican American queer artist. Just like Frida Kahlo. My art style reflects my cultural and personal influences.

I love to play in many different mediums from Acrylic painting to resin art. My styles differ with each medium.

With painting I feel so free doing  pour painting techniques just letting the paint flow and develop into an abstract piece. I find joy doing my surrealistic full figured mushroom beings inspired by people I know. They are a celebration of all body types. Painting those figures has taught me to love my body more. It made me want to share that with everyone.

My resin art came from pure curiosity,I was immediately hooked. I love embracing my femininity in my resin art. It’s fun, cute and daring. Watch them shimmer, sparkle, and flower. It’s all about the impact and wanting to express oneself truly.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I’m not working in my home studio you can find me at local art markets and festivals. Markets are crucial for being able to connect with people in person, not just online. Networking with other local artists/organizers and supporting each other’s aspirations, even if it’s just a follow on socials. People always love to ask me what inspires me and what the process is like. When anyone buys anything from me my heart swells with so much joy. Knowing that a painting or even a pair of earrings becomes part of their lives is what it’s about. Sharing that bliss with others. I am always working on my craft to an obsessive level, learning and seeking ways to evolve as a person and artist. I try to enter any call for art that resonates with me and I will soon have a piece displayed at The Suffering Artist Gallery in Hoganville.
Embracing who you are fully is the most incredible and terrifying concept. Learning about all the sides of myself shows in my art. I fully encourage everyone to channel their feelings into an outlet. Anyone can shimmer; it’s all about having the courage to do so.
