We had the good fortune of connecting with LaSundra Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaSundra, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I had no idea I would own a photography business when I purchased my camera. I enjoyed taking photos so I wanted to try my hand with a DSLR. Some people began taking interest in my work and wanted to book shoots. I was at a turning point. Should I continue doing and learning photography or should I start a photography business? The latter won. I love shooting and enjoy making people feel good. Getting paid to do it was a win-win. First, a name. The tomboy in me didn’t want anything too girly or to use my name. Keeping that in mind, I came up with Respect the Shooter (IG: @respect.theshooter) has now evolved into the newly minted LLC., RTS Photography. I will be using both names and my heart is so happy. Who knew the person who has always worked for others would become an entrepreneur? It’s new to me. Scary and invigorating at the same time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a self-taught photographer. I began shooting as a hobby with my iPhone first and then purchased my Nikon at the end of 2016. I love black & white photos. I don’t like a lot of drama in my life however I enjoy the drama black & whites Can produce in a photo. It’s classic. I am proud of how much I enjoy experiencing and learning new things. I don’t know everything. With that being said, I’m not afraid to or ashamed to ask questions for clarity. Some may say I ask a lot of questions. Lol! By doing so, I am able to complete tasks and/or find a workaround to complete projects. I am excited about becoming an entrepreneur. I recently acquired my LLC. and am so happy about it. It’s motivating me to continue building a business I’m passionate about. I got to where I am with the support of my family and friends and and mentor ship of my CrewThick ATL family. (IG: @crewthickatl) The support of my family and friends is priceless and greatly appreciated. CrewThick ATL plays a major part in my growth. This group of amazing photographers welcomed me in, answered and continue to answer my many questions. Their work inspires me and the Crew pushes me to continue learning and growing. This is my support system that is near and dear to my heart. It was not easy. Learning a new craft can be challenging in itself but the outcome is so worth it. I’ve learned along the way in retail management and photography to be open to constructive criticism. You grow from it and can become better because of it. I believe in the saying you need to find another room if you’re the smartest one in the room. Always stay open to growth. I want the world to know that I’m just getting started. I’m evolving as a person and as a photographer. I gain more confidence in myself as I become more accepting of myself. Flaws and all. The increased confidence also helps RTS Photography by giving me the courage to apply for shows, continue networking and growing. I’m excited about what the future holds and looking forward to seeing the progress.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
If my best friend was visiting for a week, what would we do? Of course we’d hit the BeltLine. I’d want to go to my favorite Indian restaurant, Desi Spice. My friend, Roz introduced me to the restaurant a few years ago. Slim & Husky’s is definitely on the list as well. My first experience there was with my CrewThick family. I’ve been taking people there and referring friends since then. I’d have to take her shopping so Atlantic Station is on the list. We also would check out Arabia Mountain. That’s one of my favorite spots. We would also possibly drive up to North Georgia so she can see some of the waterfalls. I’m pretty sure I’d take pictures as well. I’m not a big clubber so maybe a lounge or a show would also be on the itinerary.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this Shoutout interview to my Mama. You are beautiful. You are inspiring. You are the standard. You are loved.
