We had the good fortune of connecting with Lakyan Hackworth and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lakyan, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
What makes me genuinely happy is making other happy and having a peace of mind. I have always had a love for people, a smile can changes someone’s mood. I love making others happy because it gives me a sense of fulfillment. You never know what someone is going through so a simple compliment, smile, cupcake or act of kindness can change someones days.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Lay Lay’s Sweet Treats is a small black owned bakery business formed out of my mothers kitchen. I started baking a couple of years ago, I didn’t take it seriously just because it was something fun to do. Then I started receiving messages asking how much did I charge to make cupcakes and I was truly shocked that someone wanted to purchase my cupcakes. I was truly scared because people can be very harsh especially with food. But I took a leap on faith and made my first sale on my cupcakes. Luckily they were a hit and that was beginning. I decided not only did I just want to make cupcakes but I wanted to put my creative juices to the test and make custom cakes. Cakes are easy but can be difficult, especially when you’re making a cake for someone and you want to bring their vision to life. I tackled that head on and started creating custom cakes . Some cakes were a hit , some were a major fail but it made me realize that is that as long as I keep striving for greatness and take criticism , there is room for growth. Lay Lay’s Sweet Treats is a bakery looking to put a smile on their customer faces, giving them ‘Love at First Bite”.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friend to The Atlanta Belt line, we would eat Two Urban Lick and order the best fish in grits in Atlanta. Then we would ride bike all through the belt line and stop a get a Pop from King of Pop’s ! Then we would go to Ponce City market to check out stores and possibly eat more at the sushi bar. Later that night we would go to Top Golf and play a round of golf while drinking, laughing and speaking with our friends.Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to recognize Ms. Ashley who is the owner of CakedbyPetite, she has taught me so much about baking and custom cake decor. She allows me to annoy her with questions anytime of the day, ask for advice and gives me the best constructive criticism. Also , I would love to recognize my family for being test tasters for all my pastries and a huge supporter of my business. Lastly I would like to recognize Mr.Jordan Johnson, the marketing, PR and writer of Lay Lay’s Sweet Treats. He has done so much for this business, without him the creativity of Lay Lay’s Sweet Treats would be bland.
