We had the good fortune of connecting with Lacrisha Holcomb and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lacrisha, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
My business has impact by utilizing the power of culturally-relevant content for healing and humanizing the therapeutic process. I believe for too long, “therapy” has seemed inaccessible and lacked representation. There are still many barriers in the healthcare system that prevent people from engaging in counseling. By shifting mindsets about the healing process and providing enlightenment showcasing how we are all masterpieces striving to master peace on both sides of “the couch,” I have been able to reach people from expansive backgrounds. Storytelling is liberating. My impact is grounded in raising awareness that each of us is capable of reclaiming and rewriting our stories.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Art is life! It is what pulled me up and intrigued me as a youth discouraged by my surroundings. It gives me energy. Words, artwork, museums, movement. Recently, I have accepted being a “multidisciplinary artist” as my curiosity and fervor for expression knows no bounds. My first loves were reading and writing. In 2015 as a struggling graduate student, I self-published a collection of poetry and prose called “Diagnosis Consciousness: The Insanely Sane Musings of a Sophisticated Ratchet Hippie Thug Scholar”. Clearly, I have been rebelling against being defined by one specific category for years. It is simply not possible–I am infinitely inspired! I realized that being a content creator is also Visual and Performance artistry. I love dancing, speaking, and even a little bit of “acting” silly! I believe this sets me apart from others because presenting as “professional” is the least of my priorities. I am human, and it is kind of ridiculous how frequently counselors must remind fellow humans of that because of the stigma that comes with the title. I do not want to be placed on a pedestal. I have mastered nothing and I am ever-evolving. My personality is abundant. I want to be goofy, raggedy, and enriching in peace.
I got to where I am today by being myself and having vision. I imagined affording certain experiences before I could. I envisioned being perceived as competent before I was qualified. I began the process of becoming a healer while healing myself. I have just always started before I felt prepared to and trusted that the best possible outcome would align along the way. That is what “faith” is made of. I got to where I am today professionally by having faith.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area and I wanted to show them the best time ever, I would transform into a mental health amusement park! Metaphorically speaking, the trip would be full of self-care, education, healthy eats with an occasional junk food binge, and various forms of art. Of course, we would literally go to an amusement park, such as Frankie’s Fun Park and channel the freedom of our inner child by playing all of the games! We would then travel by horseback (I have never been on a horse–yet) to Clean Juice for organic smoothies to hydrate before high-tailing it to Raleigh Improv to see a world renown or local comedian who would make us chuckle, heartily. We would then speed-walk to the gym to workout or spend more money than we should at one of my favorite stores, Target. Each day, this cycle would repeat. Physical activity, healthy eating, and art. We would view exquisite art pieces at the Raleigh Museum of Art then go to Trader Joe’s to create a plant-based feast inspired by a favorite high starch and carb meal, except swapping all of the ingredients with planty stuff–yay!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout all of my Internet Besties on social media! It can be tough bringing ideas to life from a seed of vision, but the countless comments, likes, shares, and outreach from people all over the world has brought light to my little creative corner in the darkest of times. We have been able to heal and bond through universal experiences during a whole plague! Every notification of resonation has been the nudge I needed to embrace my calling as an eclectic creative with courage and confidence!
