We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyron Rizzo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyron, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
As a 23-year-old nonbinary artist living a queer Black experience – “against all odds,” (though I say that sarcastically) – I create for, and from, my community. I shake the table, as my goal is to bring more queer talent to the forefront: of the creative space, the entertainment industry, the rap game, and culture. As a queer, Black foster kid cycled through nine different homes by the age of five before being adopted, I found solace in art and music very early on. My work speaks from and is for those I share experience and community with. I voice and infuse a sense of joy into what would otherwise seem a desolate set of conditions of loss and anomie surrounding the Black queer experience. I’ve already been able to accrue an organic TikTok following of 23k with my evocative content made to challenge and disrupt the gender binary. I also have featured poems in multiple journals and anthologies (such as Culture Icon Zine, FourteenPoems and Polari Press’ Creating in Crisis Anthology, to name a few). Still, music remains my first and forever love, and I am eager to finally share that passion with the world. My goal is not only to reach a wider audience, but to be intentionally provocative to speak truth to the queer Black experience, expanding perceptions of queerness, transness, Blackness, and all the identities and communities I will always find myself at the intersections of.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Kyron Roberts, creatively known as Kyron Rizzo, is a 23-year-old nonbinary artist ready to shake the table and bring more queer talent to the forefront of the rap game. Their provocatively bold & melodic east coast flow blends together Rap, Pop, R&B & Grunge to produce an alternative, punk-rock sound true to their Brooklyn roots. While they are excited for their music career to truly evolve, rap is only one of many interests for Rizzo. Though their music journey is just beginning, they have technical training in fine art, poetry, dance and comedy, from their time studying at Wesleyan (Middletown, CT) and performing with the university’s long-standing improv group, Gag Reflex, in addition to having featured poems in multiple journals and anthologies (such as Culture Icon Zine, FourteenPoems and Polari Press’ Creating in Crisis Anthology, to name a few). Still, music remains their first and forever love, and they’re eager to finally share that passion with the world. Kyron aims to build and evolve into a full-time recording artist, either signed to a major label or working alongside a trusted mentor to learn more about the industry and collaborate with other creatives. Their goal is not only to reach a wider audience, but to also refine their burgeoning talents and skills around lyricism, vocal range, production value and performance techniques. At the end of the day, the girl loves to dance and put on a show, okie.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m very much a home body, so a week with my best friend would probably be spent binge watching our favorite anime like Hunter x Hunter or JoJo at my flat, if we did venture out it would probably be us planning a trip to Comic Con, or a fae garden party by the beach (which we’ve done before, because we’re boujee).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My adopted father, Jason (professionally known as Peter Chan of the underground 90’s Hip-Hop group, Science of Sound or S.OS.) initially sparked my interest in the world of rap and music as a whole. I credit much of my early inspiration to witnessing my father’s artistry and S.O.S’s close connection with a Tribe Called Quest, along with family roast sessions and games of Skully on the front stoop of our Greene Ave apartment. It’s moments like those, memories of dissing and spitting in Bed Stuy, that I attribute many a bar to and continue to draw on to this day. Other inspirations for me include the works of JunglePussy, Ocean Kelly, Cakes Da Killa, Leikeli47, BbyMutha & Ashnikko and consider my work in the community of my contemporaries, such as LilNas X and Kidd Kenn.
