We had the good fortune of connecting with Kirsten Slocumb and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kirsten, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Starting my own business was a huge risk. In the beginning I was worried about being able to financially support myself. Now that I’ve been doing nails for a while, I realize that I can definitely support myself. I took my first risk in 2018, when I quit my retail job, and began doing nails full time. This motivated me to give doing nails my all because I had nothing else to fall back on. It just had to work. This year I took a risk by putting up the money and allocating more time to become a certified lash technician. So far everything is working out just fine. The saying “you have to spend money to make money” is true for sure. You also can’t be afraid to chase your dreams. Regret is harder for me to live with than failure. If I ever fail at something, I’ll be happy knowing I tried, and I gave it my all.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a licensed nail technician and certified lash technician. Every time I do a service and my client smiles and shares their satisfaction with their service with me, I get so excited. I live for the moments where I’m able to make someone else feel good about themselves. It wasn’t easy to get to the point where all my clients leave satisfied. It took a lot of practice and determination. I put a lot of time into learning and growing these skills. It didn’t just happen over night. I take what I learn from other artist, either in person working in a salon with me or virtually on YouTube University, and I see how I can apply it to my work in the most beneficial way. I’m not afraid to ask for help when I want to learn something new. When I provide a service, I want my clients to leave feeling not only like it was worth the money, but that it was worth more. I provide luxury services at prices that are still affordable for the average person. My brand is about creating because it’s a passion of mine and not just a way to make a lot of money. I truly love what I do.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Who better to show off Atlanta than an Atlanta native herself? The best affordable breakfast / brunch options are The Flying Biscuit, Ria’s Bluebird, Thumbs Up Diner, and Egg Harbor Cafe. The best hangout spots for drinks and food are Boogaloo, Mad House, Midtown Diner, and Area 4

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely wouldn’t be the artist that I am without meeting some amazing people along my journey. I’ve had the opportunity to work in several salons. Each salon allowed me the opportunity to learn from other artists, as well as, learn how different individuals run their own successful business. I’m very grateful for the experience I’ve gained working in those salons.
