We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiesance and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kiesance, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Every day is a risk for me. God called me out of work over a year ago and told me to start a business. It was hard to ignore job opportunities I qualified for without a constant source of income, no help from the state, no handouts and bills to pay. All I had was faith. I feel like today, it’s a risk to have only one job, so to have none is extremely risky. But for me, it was more of a risk to be outside of God’s will and not walking in purpose. It’s like a paradox. Taking the risk of going against what I thought was my natural state and throwing myself into fashion and podcasting has been extremely rewarding. I’ve been able to realize the potential that has been lying dormant for so long. I’ve learned that I will make something out of nothing. When all you have is plan A, your work ethic is different. I’m creating, designing, managing, scouting, producing.. I’m a visionary. I made my logo, designed my website from scratch, came up with a concept, a whole vision, I even created an animation video for Poet’s Pitch. All of which I’ve NEVER done before or went to school for. I’m surprising myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been writing, drawing, designing, and creating since I was about 8 years old. It came to me naturally. I would have dreams of fashion that I had never seen before. Poetry would fly off my tongue. I wasn’t consistent with my art because in my household, nurturing those natural gifts, wasn’t a thing. Good grades were emphasized and seemed to be the “failsafe” way to earn my father’s approval. Over the years, I had to realize where my purpose was embedded. I started having dreams again. In 2018, I invested in an iPad & pencil and would stay up late nights drawing what I visualized. By this time, it would take a lot more practice to produce what I was envisioning. Since then, I’ve expanded my portfolio. Currently creating dresses, I designed for a wedding this summer. I launch my podcast, Poet’s Pitch tomorrow.
Art was never something I was taught. I was always creating in my mind, I just needed courage to bring vision into fruition. That was hard. I never walked my own path as a kid. To be an adult now, with no one to stop me from doing what I desire, breaking the habit of stopping is still a battle. Just as much as I try to become, I must attempt to not embody the very thing that stopped me from becoming sooner. One thing I can say is that I’ve always known who I was, who I am. Even when people would tried to put me in a box. I’ve learned that our history hints to our future. Those little specs of light are previews of tomorrow and we should pay attention and ignite that light, early on. I want people to know that my brand is about being authentic to who you are, being self-aware, knowing your worth, and speaking your truth, even when it’s not welcomed. Sometimes I feel like a lot of time was wasted because I wasn’t given that opportunity [to speak my truth], but I’m grateful because it’s made me more passionate about walking in purpose and inspiring others to do the same. It’s the intention behind all my businesses.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like spontaneity. I would try new places. I like having first-time memories with friends. I don’t have “go-to” places, unless we’re talking home furnishing stores. I’ll have a ball in Home Goods. To be honest, in most cases, you’ll find me somewhere creating. I can have fun anywhere. I take my iPad & my vibe wherever I go. So, anywhere can be the best time ever. I am adventurous though. I love Tree Runners in Bloomfield Hills. I love go-kart racing. I love big bodies of water, natural scenery. I appreciate a rooftop view. The oxygen just seems better up there. I love open-mics at Kolas. Wherever the creativity is flowing, I want to be present. I love giving back, so there’d be no best time ever without either feeding the less fortunate or donating to a shelter. I’m big on spending time with my family right now, bonding with my siblings and having fun days with my nephews. I love to eat, but I really love to cook. I enjoy having deep conversation over meals. My bestfriend loves sushi, I’d take her to Sakana Sushi lounge. Neither one of us are big drinkers. I love tea and smoothies, so I’d take her to Kung Fu Tea. I like to wonder sometimes and see what I discover. There’s a lot of nice places we’re overlooking. I appreciate the little things, so a walk on a nice day, catching the sunset, and cruising to my ‘self love’ playlist is really enjoyable for me. And we’d end her trip with service on Sunday. Turn up for Jesus!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would give a shoutout to Morgan Makail. I feel like my meeting her was divine appointment and lead to me being redirected after getting way off my course. I had this strong pull to volunteer for her conference and I’ve been moving in faith on a higher level ever since.
