We had the good fortune of connecting with Kiara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kiara, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My business actually started with me taking pictures of myself… believe it or not. I would go all out and do these elaborate photoshoots because I needed pictures for Instagram since I was making YouTube videos (and still do). I’m not really sure why I decided to do these extravagant photoshoots, but I’m glad I did! At the time that I started doing this, I was working at an arts and craft store and that really fueled my creativity. I would get all types of ideas from what I seen, I knew the best time to catch the lowest prices, I had my employee discount… it was a good time. I really enjoyed the whole process and wanted to start taking pictures of other people, so I did. That’s how Kaptured by Kiara was born.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Thank you so much, it’s definitely appreciated! I think what sets me apart the most is that I am me, and my unorthodox story about how I got started and created a business. There’s no other like me… and this goes for everyone. There is no other person that’s like you, thinks like you, creates like you.
I am a self- taught photographer so the road was not easy at all, but I love the journey. Teaching myself everything from learning camera settings to editing/ skin retouching and finding all the right equipment that professionals use, has been hard but rewarding. If not the best lesson, then definitely one of them is to buy good quality equipment so that you won’t have to keep wasting money on buying the same thing over and over again. Just go ahead and spend the money on things that will last for years to come.
What I want the world to know about me and my business is that I treat clients with how I want to be treated. I love to have fun at my photoshoots, so making sure my client is having fun as well, comfortable and even show them the some of the pictures during the shoot to assure that they’re doing a great job or just showing them how it’s coming out, is important to me. I take my time with editing and making sure it’s up to par because I don’t want to deliver anything less than that. I really love what I do and you’d definitely be able to tell when working with me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Say we still weren’t in the middle of a panini (one of the many names the internet refers a pandemic as) I’d take them to Ponce City Market. It’s a nice area where you could go shopping and eat, but the rooftop is where it’s at. It has a bar if you want to stay inside and play games, and the outside area has a bar as well and you can overlook Atlanta, there’s a mini golf course and some carnival games you can play. Did I mention they have a slide?
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
EVERYONE! My family and friends, clients, people who like and share my posts on social media, put my name in rooms I’m not in, etc. Everyone deserves a thank you and a shoutout for everything they’ve done for me, big and small.
