We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Staley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
As a music teacher I wanted to provide the type of learning content that I wish I had access to as a young musician. Growing up in a musical family I had a natural affinity for music so my parents put me in piano lessons. My teacher did give me a great foundation but lessons soon became like “more homework”. My goal with Musical Journeys is to create content that makes learning music fun and engaging no matter your age or skill level.
What should our readers know about your business?
There are two things that set me apart from others in my industry. My passion and unique (musical) journey…in all honesty I believe these are the very elements that differentiate us all. As a pianist I started in the church like a lot of musicians but my performance credits span several genre’s. I’m also a classically trained percussionist. I mention this because I often use my experience as a touring and session musician to aid my students. The experience levels represented in my teaching studio go from beginners just starting their “Musical Journey” to experienced musicians that are working to perfect their craft.
The growth and development of my business didn’t come overnight and honestly took quite a bit of trial and error. It also took having discipline to find and focus on my niche market/student. I’ve also been blessed to see the benefit of social media and word of mouth marketing to grow my studio. My piano parents are great and are always open to leave reviews and offer referrals. A few things I’m excited about are the release of my jazz project next summer as well as my musicians development course offering that focuses on advanced students prepping for collegiate auditions and/or would like to pursue careers in music. Music has always been an outlet that allows me to express and convey my emotions when words fail. My goal with Musical Journeys is to help others find their unique sound and voice.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The CSRA (Central Savannah River Area) has a lot of hidden gems.
There’s nothing like a great scenic walk (especially in the morning). The Augusta area offers places like the Savannah Rapids, Riverwalk, Clarks Hill Lake and the newly renovated 5th Street (Freedom) Bridge.
If you’re a coffee snob like I am Augusta has several places scattered about. I tend to favor Rooted Coffeehouse and Goat Kick Coffee(Evans), Metro Coffeehouse, and Buona Caffe (downtown). Cavaliers Coffeehouse (North Augusta) All of these spots also have great WIFI which is a huge plus.
The arts scene is definitely one to be appreciated and from poetry to live music to performances at the Miller Theatre there’s always something to get into. First Fridays on Broad St in Augusta is a whole vibe with the various shops, bars, and restaurants you could really just take your pick. During the spring months Saturday morning markets by the river is filled with local vendors and great food as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of all God!!! Without Him none of this would be possible. Also my wife Dana and my family whose unwavering support keeps me motivated. My professors at my HBCU Benedict College, some of which I still call upon to this day for advice.
