We had the good fortune of connecting with Keven Mema and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keven, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“All good ideas start out as bad ideas,, that’s why it takes so long.” – Steven Spielberg
This quote to me simplifies my experience and journey as a filmmaker. No matter what I’ll be working on the initial idea is always the roughest conception of the final product but as I refine and develop I end up with something that always brings a smile to my face and it is the toughest thing to achieve as you doubt and question yourself and whether it’s even worthwhile pursuing.
I like this Spielberg quote because of how simple it is and how honest it is about the process of creating something. There is no easy way to creating something your passionate about.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an all rounded filmmaker or at least I’d like to believe that. I’ve had a camera in my hands for as long as i could remember and I’ve always loved the idea of capturing feelings that’ll forever last in a medium and film ended up being the one I choose as I’ve developed over the years.
I couldn’t tell you what sets me apart from others but I feel like I have a genuine passion to pour out all of myself into a project no matter the role I play on or off set.
I’m proud and excited of the work I’ve done on my up and coming short film and other projects I’ve had a pleasure of working on.
I’m at the beginning of my career but it’s already been a very difficult journey to embark on as it’s setting the foundations of where I’d see myself in a few years. I don’t think anything comes easy, everything takes time and dedication. I’ve overcome challenges by just always picking myself up and never throwing in the towel even if it’s the better thing to do.
I’ve learned to be patient and never to compare myself to others, I’ve learnt to put my pride to the side as well as my ego when it comes to collaborating with others.
Well I would want the world to look out for me and anyone I associate with in the film space as we’re kids with big dreams and want to tell our stories for a large audience.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting I would take him straight to Brooklyn for the food and I think we’d start off at Madre for a bite and a drink. The restaurant is a contemporary eatery serving global fare, the food there is great and it’s fun place to hangout and catch up, talk films and music.
From there I think we’d just continue on bar hopping and hitting the areas hot spots.
We’d also go around look for art and graffiti, I’d also take him back to Manhattan just exploring and sight seeing and doing the tourist rounds of things.
I’d also love to introduce them to other close friends here and also chop it up and mingle.
I’m into activities in specific racing, so we’d gather a group of friends and go karting together at an indoor track or outdoor track.
It’s New York City there’s a number of things to get involved in and find to fill up a day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s a number of people who deserve a shoutout but the most important one on the list would have to be my mom for all the things she’s put on the line to give me the opportunity to chase my dream from Zimbabwe all the way to New York City.
