We had the good fortune of connecting with Keta Greggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keta, what role has risk played in your life or career?
The moment you decide to become an entrepreneur, you instantly become a risk taker. Taking risks are inevitable because you never know what the outcome will be. I literally decided to invest in an idea that I was passionate about, didn’t know anything about business, marketing or sales. Just a vision and some fly clothes! Four years in, I’m definitely a pro risk taker because I’m always gonna bet on my brand! No, I’m not sure if my community ( hey Mauve Babes) will LOVE my next collection but I’m most definitely willing to take my chances. Without taking risks I wouldn’t have made the decision to start Mauve Boutique!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Fashion and putting looks together has been second nature to me for as long as I could remember! I started off blogging and creating YouTube videos of lookbooks and ootd’s. And I remember after graduating college in 2014, I wanted to be a social worker by day and personal stylist on the side. I was already styling my close friends on a daily basis so I knew I could do it. And then in 2017, I remember I was working as a case manager in Brooklyn, this idea just came over me! I was thinking, instead of styling people individually, I want to style women all over! I was in love with wearing the color mauve at the time and the rest is history! Mauve Boutique was born!
I’ve been a part of several mentorship programs, workshops and hundreds of hours of YouTube BUT my biggest teacher is through experience. I thought that since my clothes were cute people would just find me ( lol ) and shop my brand. I had no clue what branding and marketing was. So visibility was and still is my biggest challenge when it comes to business. My goal everyday is to get my brand in front of new people.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned while in business, and I would like to credit for my success, is focusing on my CURRENT customers. Building a community with them and not just selling to them. Analyzing patterns of what they like and what they don’t like. Being appreciative and grateful for customers and sales I do have first! I used to be like man I cannot wait until I’m making 5 figures a month not even acknowledging the sales that I was already making. The customers I already have started my top priority. And the more I focused on making their experience the best, I started gaining more and more customers!
Another important lesson is to create your own lane and be your own MUSE. Just because an item is selling out in someone else’s business does not mean you have to buy and it is not a guaranteed sell out for you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love a place that has good food, music and aesthetically pleasing location to take pictures. If we can’t get a fancy drink and take a picture count me out lol. We have so many options like that here in Philly but we could start at a restaurant called Bookers. I also live for a good brunch and day party!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give a shout out to my Mauve Babes!! That’s the community I curated throughout the years of having my business. They are so loyal and they encourage me to keep going at times when it’s easy to give up!
Shout out to my support system that keeps me motivated and scream “yassss” for me in every accomplishment I make, big or small! I love ALL of y’all but special shout to Khiyah, Bria and Janae. Y’all ride through this journey with me as if it was your own. Forever grateful.
