We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenneth Nance Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenneth, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
Matthew 6:34 says: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of it’s own. Anxiety and mental health has really been an important issue to deal with this year specifically; and my chosen profession can drive you crazy with anxiety. Am I going to book this? Am I doing something wrong? Why am I not booking? When is my next audition going to come? Does this person not like me? Do I need to change my look? I mean there are a million things that come to your mind that will really drive you crazy if you let them, and the fact of the matter is that you have very little control over ANY of the factors that might land you a job. For me this quote helps me to stay present. It helps me to not get defeated by the thoughts of tomorrow, and to do the best that I can today. Ironically, when you’re present you tend to be a better artist.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an actor and have been acting for Film & Television for about 7 years now. I love acting because I feel like the stories that we tell help shape the world, and give others an understanding or perspective of life that they might not have had before, and that is essential to growth. My journey was not easy in the slightest, but as far as how I overcome the challenges, I was blessed with a gift that has proven to be invaluable in this field: Tenacity. Or…stubborness depending on your perspective (laughs) The lessons I’ve learned along the way in this journey are to lead with love, trust in yourself, trust in God, and to persevere in times of doubt and uncertainty. All of which are a LOT easier than they seem! What I want the world to know about me? I love storytelling. I love the beauty of vulnerability. Every aspect of it, whether it be in front of or behind the camera. Whether it be on stage or backstage. It takes a very courageous person to be a part of this field and there’s always something to learn. And even knowing that, I want to learn as much of it as humanly possible.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well when we could go and see plays, I’d DEFINITELY take them to the Academy Theatre, that’s always a blast! But I would also say The Battery, Stone Mountain ParkThe Mall Of Georgia, Sun In My Belly, Marlowe’s Tavern, and definitely Copeland’s are my go to’s. All of these are great places off of the top of my head!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s a lot of people and organizations! Most prominently GregAlan William’s The Actor’s Breakthorugh run by GregAlan Williams and Sophia Beecham. If it weren’t for them I wouldn’t have even gotten started. But in addition to them, My Parents and sister, Clameirdre Prince, Andre Lamar, Antoine Privott, Margo Moorer, Denise Armstrong, Madeline Hatter, Robert Drake, Vince Pisani, Jeff Rose, Joseph Lavender & Atlanta Speed Scenes, Eralphia Eckles, Barbara Divisek, Ray Bengston,, Sam Retzky, Eileen O’Farrell, Lauren Halperin & The Working Actor Group, Victor Love & Evolv Atlanta, The Rob Mello Studio, Aligned Stars Agency, Promote Talent Agency, Glitter Talent Agency Yeesh. A lot of people but all of them were extremely important in my growth and development both as an artist and a human being. So yeah I dedicate this to them!
