We had the good fortune of connecting with kelly grimshaw and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi kelly, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I’m the type of person who refuses to give up. .I’ve been a photographer for 10 years. Only four years professional, which have been a constant roller coaster of highs and lows. There are some days I wanna give up and some days I can’t wait to photograph my next session. There were times when I would compare my work to other photographers work and wanted to just give up. I got to the point that I was questioning myself if I made the right decision quitting my corporate HR job to follow my dream as a photographer. I wanted to give up, which at at the time made the most since. I have a entire army behind me supporting me and loving me…always telling me how talented I am….that I have a gift…how I inspire them. This changed everything for me. Hearing and receiving all the positive comments, text and phone calls, made all the doubts and sometimes 24/7 “cry fest” worth pushing through to continue doing what I love. I know now there are so many depending on me to capture their memories. Now more than ever my passion for photography has grown.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was working a full time and doing photography on the side for free for those who could not afford to pay for pictures. After quitting my corporate job I took on photography full-time. It was not easy. I taught myself everything I know. A lot of sleepless nights. I got to where I am today by staying on the grind, never giving up and hustling. What I’ve learned about this business that its a very competitive market and its not for the weak. You will have to ALWAYS stay on top of your hustle. Never compare yourself to others because everyone has their own way of editing – not everyone is going to be your client and that’s ok okay.

To never allow anyone to break you. In this industry you will have your group of haters, don’t fold, keep pushing by being the best photographer. I’m that photographer that you can be yourself and feel comfortable around.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a ATL girl, so I would start off either at Ponce City Marker or Little 5 then head over to Piedmont Park. Around dinner time either head over to Cutz , Two Urban Licks, HardRock or Vortex.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First. Without God nothing is possible. Second, I want to thank my amazing husband for helping me start my business, for going on every weekend session (when you work 50-60 weeks) for loving me and believing in my unconditionally. Third, thank you Brittni Moore for pushing me to start my business and gifting me my business logo 4 years ago and believing in me. Fourth. Lisa Marie my bestie for always willing to let me use you for my promotional shoots and of course ALWAYS believing in me. Fifth. My kids, thank you for supporting your momma and never complaining that Im always working.. And last….MY BOMB CLIENTS. Thank you for trusting me to capture your memories, believing in me and supporting me.
