Meet Kelcey Walker | Baker & Treat Maker

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelcey Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelcey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always loved baking and giving my treats to friends and family! Eventually, people started placing orders for birthdays and other events, and I took some time to think about if it was something I really wanted to pursue. I wanted to still love baking no matter what, and I didn’t know if creating a business would take that joy away. But after probably a year of debating, I decided to go for it! I figured, if I love it and love creating things that make people happy or add to their events, starting my own business will only add to that, not take away from it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others is my heart behind what I do. When I do anything, I try to give 100% to it. I don’t want to only give half of my best, you know? Something I’ve learned through church (shoutout FullTurn Church!) specifically is the power behind doing things in the spirit of excellence. To me, that doesn’t mean having to be perfect at everything. It simply means just doing my best at whatever I have set my hands to. So if I’m baking a cake, cookies, making treats, decorating desserts or whatever it may be, I have the mindset that I’m giving this my absolute best effort. In that, I remember why I love these things, and I believe that translates to joy in what I’m doing. When you have that spirit of excellence and that joy behind it all, then you see that in the final results. So having that mindset changes everything in my opinion!
I’m not saying other bakers and treat makers don’t have that same heart, because I’m sure that many do! This is just something that I really try to live by and am proud of myself for.
I’m definitely excited to see what the future holds for my baking career. Over the last couple of years, I’ve had some cool opportunities to do different events and meet a lot of people that have supported my business. So I’m looking forward to see what else I can be a part of, because I’m learning something new each and every time!
Starting your own business is a lot of work, no matter what it is. In my case, I’m always thinking about what products I want to sell, I’m always looking for events to sell my treats at, I’m always looking for new ways to advertise, I’m thinking ahead to the holidays, etc. But I got to where I am right now by pushing through and continuing to take a step forward everyday! It can get overwhelming, but I tell myself just one thing and one step at a time. I remain grateful, and remind myself that I have a support system, and ultimately that I have God on my side, and as long as I keep Him in the front of it all, it’s all going to be okay. More than okay!
The biggest thing I would want anyone to know about my story and what I offer is that there is a lot of heart behind each piece of this. I put a lot of time and thought into each creation, so the results that you see are never anything that’s just thrown together, but what you see is a result of my passion! On my social media I say, “baking your day a little brighter”. That’s what I want people to see! I hope that every purchase brings a smile and that something as simple as a treat can make your day a little brighter because of the heart I’m putting in to it! One of my favorite things to do is sell cake pops at different events. I create cake pops that look like ice cream cones, snow cones, cookies, fruits, etc. The BEST feeling is seeing the little kid’s faces light up when they see them (the adults to it too)! They run over to my table in excitement, and it’s honestly the cutest thing ever. You’re like well, it’s just a cake pop, right? But I think that’s the perfect example of what I’m saying… It’s more than the item itself, but it’s the joy and all of the thought that I put into it (that spirit of excellence), that translates to others so they can experience it too!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is tough! I would definitely want to start any day at a cute coffee shop. Some place like Cool Beans in Marietta Square, Piece of Heaven in Dallas, or Rev Coffee in Smyrna. First Watch is also my favorite spot for breakfast right now!
We would definitely be eating all day long. But off the top of my head I’ll say DaVinci’s Pizzeria in Midtown, Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, The Juicy Crab, Fogo de Chao if we’re feeling fancy, Beni Hana or Jinya Ramen Bar. Jinya is my current obsession and I literally can’t get enough of it! I’m getting it almost once a week right now!
We would definitely spend some time at The Fox! I’m a theatre kid at heart, so this is a must. Also, maybe a dinner and a movie place like Studio Movie Grill. At some point we would probably do a paint class somewhere. Those are a BLAST with groups. There are other group environment classes where you can paint pottery, build plant terrariums or even create your own pottery. My sister and I did one of those for her birthday and we immediately wanted to go back! I would love to do a candle making class too! Maybe we would even take a cooking class! That’s always sounded so fun to me, and you can do those in Alpharetta. I would also suggest an escape room! I get very competitive, so a good game is always fun. That’s all I’ve got off the top of my head!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m definitely shouting out my parents. They have always supported me in anything I’ve wanted to do. All throughout my life, they’ve been at every band concert, every chorus concert, every play, every church event, and all of my baking gigs. They constantly support me in whatever I choose to do, and they encourage me that I CAN do those things. They are always reminding me that God is making ways for me I can’t even begin to imagine, and they are always right there with me to celebrate in every success or encourage me when I’m struggling. They are everything to me, and I love them so very much!
