We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Sauls and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I can honestly say that this was not my doing, but it was God. All through out my life, God was dropping clues of what he wanted me to do from a little girl all the way to this day. When I was a little girl, he used to show me visions of me on stage, but I didn’t understand what he was showing me. I saw myself as a grown woman on stage singing. And although my family was a singing family, I was the shy one that stood in the background singing. I was so shy you probably had to tie me up and drag me out onto the stage just to get me to do it. Little by little God provided opportunities for me that built up my courage over time. It started with leading songs in the church, to later being nominated to be Minister of Music at two churches, to speaking at churches and acting in church plays. I remember someone told me one day, “I could feel your anointing while you were acting.” It puzzled me, because I never associated the anointing with acting. I just thought it was merely a gift and the anointing was for people in the pulpit. Little did I know, God had just dropped another clue. As some years passed, God began to speak PURPOSE to me and told me that I would be doing this for a living only I will be doing it for his glory. As a little girl, when I saw myself singing on that stage, I noticed that the audience had their hands raised. It was as if I were standing behind them and I could also see myself on stage. I started asking why are their hands raised, are they praising me? Surely not! Later God reminded me of that dream and said that I was worshipping him, and that is why the people’s hands were raised. They worshipped him also. That was another clue! After I had gotten so many revelations and confirmations, I realized that God was going to use me in a unique way.. to introduce many people to Him.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It has not been a smooth road at all. My entire life has been one big rollercoaster ride with many ups and downs and so many twists and turns. But the saving grace is God has kept me stable and strong through it all. My gift and anointing have been fought for years, but I stood through the testing because of my PURPOSE. This thing is bigger than me, BUT GOD has shown me who He is through it all. I was told that I was not wanted, and that I didn’t look the part that I would never be chosen. Those are painful things to hear, but I had to learn that what I am destined to do has nothing to do with how I look. It has to do with what I am purposed to do and what God put deep down inside of me. He let me know that I am here to minister, not to entertain. There are many people hurting, and they need to be ministered to. I just knew that if I could get through the process of being made into the image God, he would be able to use me mightily to help his people. I remember as a little girl telling my mom that I wanted to bring hope to people. I didn’t realize what I was saying at the time, but God did. He is preparing me even now through all the struggles and the pain that I encounter. And those are some of the main ingredients that will prepare you to help people to overcome what they are struggling with. If you don’t abandon your process, YOU WILL FIND PURPOSE THROUGH YOUR PAIN!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Sundial at the Western Peachtree Hotel, because it is an elegant 5-star hotel. And then to the rooftop of Reverb RT60 for dancing and live performances.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank TD Jakes, although I don’t know him personally, he has literally been my Moses that helped me through my Purpose journey. God led me to watch this man for years as he ministered, and you can tell that God told him what to teach, because it literally felt like he was peeking through the windows of my life. It was almost as if he knew the struggles I dealt with. He spoke prophetically to them and gave me the understanding I needed to press on. He helped me to understand and to focus on the lessons I needed to learn in order to continue in my process to the Promised Land.
