We had the good fortune of connecting with Kathy DeLuca and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathy, what role has risk played in your life or career?
To me, risk taking has always played an important role in my life. I have always been one to push limits and expectations to keep the originality factor behind my brand and my music. For example, 3 years ago I took on a musical project so different that I felt like I was almost taking a mental risk by doing so. I was uncomfortable during that time because I was being challenged on the daily. But doing it helped me become a better musician and in the end, I actually learned more than I thought I would. So the point is, if you always stay within your comfort box you can not grow at all as a musician. You need to take mental risks in order to move along in your growth process.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Music has been there since day 1. I found the love of music through my Uncle who had a few synths and it all started from there. I’ve always had an electronic sounding style but I like to mix it up with Trap, Funk, and House also. By age 5 I had my first 88 key electronic keyboard and was recording full songs on floppy disks. That was back in 1999. Then I purchased my own laptop and started producing music seriously under my alias BERMUDA by age 15. I’m 25 now and preparing to release my 6th EP titled “GO”. There is this one song on the EP, “Box”. It’s actually about my upbringing, the challenges that had to do with being raised by overprotective parents, and how it got me to where I am now. There is always a lot of self-doubt that comes along with being a musician/artist. I have learned that you should always trust your instincts. No matter what others might say. I learned to stay true to myself even when it gets hard. And boy is it hard. I’ve had to learn how to step away from what just won’t work. Thats the beauty of creating. You just keep going. You keep climbing mountains even though you’re tired and can’t see the top. Just like you can overcome any hurdle as long as there’s a strong vision and a plan in mind. I can humbly say that it is the power of prayer and keeping the faith that has kept that vision clear for me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Moving to Atlanta from Cleveland in 2013 was a major change for me! I absolutely love ATL and everything it offers. I’ve performed a few times at Smiths Olde Bar so I would recommend this venue to anyone interested in performing or just to hang out. A few venues I have personally been to and would love to play someday are Aisle 5, Masquerade, Vinyl at Center Stage, and Terminal West. Church was one of the first bars anyone ever took me to in ATL. The vibe is cool and its usually pretty packed. MJQ Concourse is a great bar with good music ALWAYS. Argosy in EAV is also one of my favorites on weekends when the DJ’s are spinning vinyl. I am also into hiking so Atlanta is a great place for that as well. My favorite spot right now is the bamboo forest at East Palisades.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to Cohan Scott a.k.a Cohan The Kid. He had a major impact in my life musically. We went through several creative processes together and it truly taught me everything. He is a light and inspiration to all. For the hard work you continually put into your art every day Cohan, thank you. I also want to thank God first, my family, friends and of course all of my supporters for holding it down! I definitely would not be here today making music if it weren’t for all the people I just named. Thank you.
