We had the good fortune of connecting with KaShunti Farmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi KaShunti, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I remember sitting in the living room of my old apartment feeling burned out from my previous job. I was overworked and underpaid, and began considering other sources of income. I didn’t want just another side hustle, but something that I could grow and call my own. A friend and fellow Virtual Assistant called me and asked me if I’d come on as her Assistant. “You’re very organized and good with Administrative Tasks,” she said. So I figured, “Sure! What could it hurt?”

Eventually, I fell in love with the profession and began my own virtual assistant business. It offered me all of the things that I’d been looking for in a career: flexibility, freedom, fulfillment. I was able to do something that I loved and was passionate about without it feeling too much like “work”. Starting my business also gave me the ability to set myself and my future children up for generational wealth and success. As a first generation college student, graduate, and business owner it’s imperative that I set the example for my younger sister and our family. This business is about more than just me, but it ensures so much for my family.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a Virtual Assistant since 2019. I launched my business on my 25th birthday, and haven’t looked back. What sets me apart from other Virtual Assistants is my ability to effectively manage my business and a corporate career at the same time. I don’t believe in depriving myself of any of my passions, and want to have a healthy balance of both. I got to where I am today in my business due to expertise that I’ve developed throughout my corporate career. Now, don’t get me wrong, it can be challenging sometimes as with all things. However, the rewards far outweigh the hardships. I overcome my challenges by allowing myself the grace to feel my emotions for 24 hours. (Word to my good sis Beyonce)! After those 24 hours are up, I make a plan, execute it, and move forward.

A lesson that I’ve learned along the way is that your business will not be for everyone, and everyone won’t be for your business. It’s vital to niche down and focus on your target audience so that you attract those ideal clients that align directly with what your mission and goals are for your business.

I want the world to look at me and see that anything is possible, and that you can have as many passions as you see fit. You don’t have to settle for just one, and you shouldn’t have to. You’re able to have it all, and nothing and no one can stop you from achieving it but you!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My friends and I love a good time with great laughs and even better drinks! For a week long trip, I’d take my friend to several key restaurants, just for the experience and the vibes. We’d stop at Slutty Vegan, Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks, and a few upscale places such as Del Friscos (we’re a little bourgeoise from time to time as well). We’d order lemon drop martinis, cosmopolitans, and French 75s after a couple rounds of tequila shots. The most fun places for us to go is anywhere we could be with each other. We bring the vibes with us. Anywhere around the city with a nice aesthetic and scenery is where you would find us.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
While I would be nothing without the grace and mercy of God, I would be equally nothing without the support, motivation, and encouragement of my younger sister, Autumn! She is who I do it for. She pushes me to be the best that I can be, and gives me so much gentleness and grace on the days where I’m not my best. As her older sister, she often tells me how much she looks up to me and admires me. I make it my mission everyday to not only live for myself, but to live in a way that she can be proud of and want to emulate. The little girl is my God given solace!
