Meet Karson Norris | Hairstylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Karson Norris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karson, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I believe majority of my success has come from pushing myself out of my comfort zone. In turn it sounds like a very typical thing to say, but when it’s reality, it’s different. Taking a jump and trying something new is vital to growth in yourself and your business. Over time I’ve learned if I don’t do things that scare me, I’ll never get anywhere. Every time I step out of my comfort zone and do something that scares me, it always pays off. Pairing this with determination and hard work has helped get to where I am today, however I’m still growing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My story in the creative field began at a young age. I started at a salon in North Georgia to try it out and see if I liked it. After a little while I realized it was what I was meant to do. I remained in the same salon for 4 years continuing to grow, but Atlanta always called my name. In 2020 I took the leap, moved to Atlanta, and started at Melrose & McQueen. I started over with new friends, new coworkers, and a new environment. It took a little bit to adjust to the changes, but I never felt at any point that I made the wrong choice. 2 years later and I wouldn’t do a single thing different. I wouldn’t be where I am or where I’m going to be one day unless I took that scary jump and changed my entire life. I’m continuing to grow and still have so much more I want to do, but all with time and hard work. My art is such a huge part of my life and who I am. Hair is an art to me because you’re taking a canvas and transforming it into something different. I was always in art shows when I was younger, so I’m not surprised I chose this career field. There’s also so many areas and branches in the industry, the possibilities are endless. I love creating a safe, fun, and lively environment for anyone who sits in my chair. The hair is important, but more importantly I just want to uplift people and make them feel beautiful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to go hiking around Atlanta and little nature preserve parks. Flower Child is one of my favorite lunch places to sit outside and have a good meal with good friends. If i’m going out at night I love to start at a restaurant and then go to some bars in Midtown afterwards!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve had many amazing mentors and support systems in my life. My first mentor was Brittney Taylor. I started working with her when I was younger just to get a taste of the industry. I ended up working with/alongside her for 4 years. She was my first inspiration in my industry. She taught me everything she had to offer and inspired me to be who I wanted to be. Later in my career I start working at Melrose & McQueen. I have an overall amazing support system and coworkers, but Jessica Wright in particular has been a direct influence on me. I’ve been working with her for around 2 years now and the first time I worked with her I knew I was exactly where I was supposed to be. From the incredible opportunities, working with me in her spare time, meetings, and teaching me daily how to grow into the person/stylist I aspire to be, I couldn’t be more thankful. Being able to work alongside such a powerful and strong woman everyday is such an incredible thing. Without these two amazing women in my life, I wouldn’t be half the stylist and person I am today.
