We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamryn Sterling and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kamryn, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
I do many things and often times I get overwhelmed. People question why i keep myplate so full. I deal not only with high school, participating in early college, but also my extra-curricular‘s, which include theatre, art, swim, and now dance. On top of that I have to balance my school life with my social life. I’ll admit, it’s a lot, but I will never give up. Everything I do, I love. I say yes to doing so many things because I feel they would be interesting, fun, and improve my well-rounded character. I usually stick to the arts because that’s where I thrive, and I happen to be really good at my crafts. I always tell my friends, if I love it, I’m going to do it. No matter if I come home exhausted, I get to wake up every morning knowing that that day will be filled with excitement and enjoyment. Everything I’m doing is for my future.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m going to focus on my visual art for this response. I’ve been drawing and painting ever since I could hold a pencil. I am a self taught artist, deriving my knowledge from YouTube and studying others art. I was enrolled in art classes up until middle school and decided I did not like to take art classes because they were restricting. When I got to high school, with no interest in taking an art course, my theatre teacher saw my work and introduced me to the art instructor. I have been participating in Rodeo and TEA VASE art competitions since ninth grade now, and have made a strong bond with the art instructor. I’ve won many awards for my art, even winning a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo scholarship. In the future, I am excited about owning my own art studio, hosting galleries and events. I hope to set up an Etsy shop and share my art with the world. I want to bring joy to onlookers faces when they look at my art. I’m still finding my style for my professional pieces but right now my art is a mixture of semi-realism and expressionism.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was visiting Houston, I would cram a lot of activities into our short bonding period. Over the course of five days, I would take her downtown to ride scoters around Herman park and the museum district. We would visit the art museum riddled with the paintings and sculptures of the old masters. We would walk the art district to look at the creative work artists contributed to make our world more beautiful. I would then take her to a pottery class so we could bond over poorly made mugs. We could visit a few plays downtown or even go to a pool. We would have picnics at local parks just to enjoy the sun. And on the last day we would spend the night roller skating, making blisters on our feet. Every night I would cook for us: pasta’s, seafood, and even bake my famous Ooey Gooey Butter Cake. We would have a blast the whole week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would definitely shoutout my mother for supporting me through my whole journey. With four kids, she is our biggest cheerleader. Anything I will myself to do, she is there encouraging me along, telling me that I am capable and loved. She works her hardest for our dreams and does everything she can to ensure her children’s success. I am thankful for my support group, from my closest friends and family to my instructors and mentors.
