Meet Kamal Browne | Filmmaker & Teacher

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kamal Browne and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kamal, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Knowing when and how to take risks is essential. I love challenging myself to try new things because there’s always something to learn, no matter the outcome. Winning the Vans® Passion Project and Canon® Short Film contests showed me how stepping outside my comfort zone can open doors I never expected.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Storytelling has always been my main form of expression. I started with sketchbooks as a child, and once I picked up a camera in high school, I knew I wanted to pursue the arts. Directing the documentary Phillips: Lover of Horses and premiering at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival were milestones that reinforced my passion for connecting with audiences through authentic stories. Along the way, I’ve learned that resourcefulness and collaboration are vital to overcoming challenges in creative work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you’ve never visited Atlanta, I’d recommend the High Museum of Art for its immersive exhibitions. I’d also suggest exploring Ponce City Market, Edgewood, and Little Five Points for unique shopping and dining. The Beltline is perfect for walking or biking, and Piedmont Park is a great spot to relax. For live music, check out venues like Center Stage, Tabernacle, or Terminal West. As for food, my go-to spots are Foxx Original Jamaican Restaurant and Wagaya for Japanese cuisine. There’s so much to do that you’d need more than a week to experience it all.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shout out my mentors and peers at SCAD who inspired and challenged me during my MFA journey. I’d also like to recognize my family, friends, teachers, and bosses who believed in me and supported my growth. Thank you for seeing potential in me and helping me along the way.
