We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaljah Adams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaljah, what role has risk played in your life or career?

One of the most significant risks I have ever taken is becoming an entrepreneur. When I decided to take on this new venture in 2018, I didn’t think I fully understood what it meant or what it would entail. All I knew was that I enjoyed writing resumes and helping people advance in their careers—what else could I possibly need? Little did I know that this experience would force me out of my comfort zone and tap into a side of me that I never knew existed.

I am a person who isn’t too fond of the spotlight or being the center of attention. This impacted how I showed up in my business. In the beginning, I was afraid of the idea of putting myself out there on social media and posting videos because I was too worried about what people would think. I quickly learned that if I wanted my business to have an impact, then I couldn’t care what other people thought. I had to get comfortable with showing up, posting regularly, and being authentically me. So in 2020, I stepped into my fear and started showing up more on social media. I invested in social media courses to learn more about different platforms. I started practicing speaking in front of camera by recording myself. I began posting content every day to gain more visibility and exposure. This was a huge risk for me because I was putting myself out there and learning to get comfortable being the center of attention on my social media pages. Slowly but surely, I started to see results: I gained more followers who were engaging with my posts. I received positive feedback on the content I was making, and I started to land more clients. This experience showed me that although it is never easy leaving your comfort zone, taking risks is necessary for your personal growth. I learned that when you show up as yourself, the right people will gravitate towards you, which has made all the difference.

What should our readers know about your business?
The Career Advising Hub delivers high-quality career documents that help jobseekers stand out within their targeted industry and land more interviews. I believe that everyone has unique skills and achievements that make them marketable, no matter where they are in their professional journey. I work closely with each client to identify their skill sets and craft eye-catching, value-driven resumes and cover letters that boost their confidence and help them get noticed in this competitive job market.

I am most proud of the results my clients have seen after working with me. I often get clients who are frustrated with applying for jobs because they never hear back, no matter how many jobs they apply to. After I revamp their resume, I like to follow up with each client every couple of weeks to see how their job search is going and if I can provide any tips along the way. This is the part that brings me so much joy because they often respond and share how ecstatic they are because they finally landed an interview at their dream job or received an offer letter with a $10K+ salary increase just by using my services. These are always my proudest moments because they remind me that my services transform lives and produce results, and I am so thankful for that.

My success did not happen overnight. I would not be where I am today if I was not intentional about building my network. When I first started my business, I joined The Society of Elite Resume Writers, which was the best decision I ever made. Not only did it connect me with other resume writers, but it also transformed the way I thought about running my business. I learned so many valuable tips and strategies about creating a business model, implementing systems that helped me save time, and improving my mindset to achieve the goals that I wanted. I also gained a fantastic accountability buddy, friend, and mentor, Chelsea Jay, who keeps me and my business in check! I would not be where I am today if I didn’t invest in my business and network with professionals in my field. Networking is always worth it!

After graduating from undergrad, I knew I wanted to start a resume writing business, but I was waiting for the “right time” to present itself so I could start. I always had some excuse that held me back from taking a leap of faith and starting my business. Then, in December 2018, I experienced the devastating loss of someone dear to me. This experience changed the way I thought about life and time. I stopped thinking that the “right time” would magically appear itself to me because time/life is not guaranteed. So, I decided to dive headfirst into the unknown and pursue my passion of starting a business and writing resumes. That’s when The Career Advising Hub was born.  I started The Career Advising Hub with the vision of helping clients feel confident as they navigate today’s competitive job market. I know that applying for jobs have become overly complicated and if your resume is not showcasing your value, experience, and achievements in a strategic way, then you could miss out on that opportunity you always wanted. My goal is to help my clients obtain every professional opportunity that they possibly can by creating career documents that emphasize their value-proposition and unique skill sets. Through this process, I help so many of my clients see that they are more than just an employee who completes a laundry list of responsibilities every day, which boosts their confidence as they navigate their job search and brings so much joy to my heart.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We will go to some of my favorite brunch spots in NYC, such as Fat Duvall’s Rhum Cafe, Corner Social, Angel of Harlem, and Il Caffe Latte. We will take a stroll in Central Park and go on my favorite boat ride. If you’re visiting during the winter, then we have to go ice skating in Bryant Park. If it’s the summer, then a rooftop bar is the way to go!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shout-out to all of my friends and family who have been supportive throughout my business journey! I am so thankful for every like, comment, and share on social media. I am thankful for them believing in my dream, giving me constructive criticism, and going through the highs and lows with me. My circle has supported me in ways that I could not even imagine.

I’d like to give a shout out to my two close friends, Tiffany and Prince, who helped me obtain my LLC. I’d like to give a shout out to my accountability partner and friend, Chelsea Jay who is always there to listen to my business problems and help me brainstorm solutions—I don’t know what I would do without you! Lastly, I would like to give a shout out to my mother and father who believe in me even on days when I can’t believe in myself. I am so thankful for my tribe of people and all they have done to support me and my dreams!
