We had the good fortune of connecting with Joy Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
During the start of the Covid 19 pandemic I lost my job and all sources of income.
I quickly came up with a solution to start my own business in social media and photography.
My creativity and love for arts goes back to my childhood playing the clarinet and staring photography at 15.
I also have multiple sclerosis and I needed to find something that would keep me motivated, happy and brain stimulating!
Opening this business was the best decision I have ever made.
I found my passion again!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started off In the field of education at 15 and worked in education until 24.
From Special Education, At-Risk Youth, Physical Education, Media Education, Customizing and Fixing Phones
and Sports Coach ( Tennis, Football, Basketball, Swimming, and Martial Arts and Baseball. )
I left at 24 and got into the physical therapy field.
That’s When The World Took a Turn and The Pandemic Hit Hard.
While dealing with an illness at the same time, it was a struggle.
Life as I knew it changed. The Pandemic was a blessing and curse. My motivation to push more my business was during unemployment. I have been working extremely hard since 15 and none of that paid off.
What I received was barely enough to pay for gas and about 5 grocery items per week.
Without the extra fund increase from the government, I would have possibly been homeless.
Unemployment was not my survival, my mindset was.
I lost everything but I found myself again and my true passion. That’s gold to me.
I landed a career as a Social Media Digital Specialist and That Gave me more room to discover my passion for photography.
Photography has opened me up to a new world full of love, growth, travel, and fun!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would first book an Air B n B!
Air B N Bs are nice getaway spots and a great chance of your environment.
Next, We Would head to the beach!
Meditation on the beach, Go for a dip, Swim-up bars, Speedboats, Jet Skis, a nice walk on the boardwalk, and of course shopping!
For a full week, we would have time to also go fishing, kayaking, to the spa, visit museums, wine tours, and foodie tours!
At night we would visit a lounge with a selection of delicious foods or attend a local art show, comedy show, or concert!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
During my struggle during unemployment, I stared my social media / advertisement business.
I also owned a online merch / headshop.
My hashtags from my post attracted many greats in the industry who have helped me get here today!
