We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmine Burchfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jazmine, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The most important decision that contributed to my success outside of the joy of working for myself was that I would be in control of not just my future, but also my two daughters. I always thought that if I can create a successful business or two, I would be able to leave generational wealth for my family and also be an inspiration for them to do whatever they put their minds to.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
When I first started Glyde, I wasn’t making wigs and selling hair & clothes like I am today. I actually began my company in 2015 with selling self-balance scooters in STL. I knew that fad wasn’t going to last long and it definitely made me A LOT of money. I knew I had to venture into selling something else and to go into hair was the easiest decision considering my whole family does hair and I’ve been a professional braider since I was 14 year old. I was selling hair out my car and taught myself how to sew wigs. In 2016,in the midst of my company upcoming I managed a friends store. What I learned from them contributed a lot to me and my store. Fast forward to 2021 and not am I still in business and still making wigs, I also opened my own store. It took a lot of courage, good days, bad days, and motivation for me to tell myself to take it up a notch. There’s always room to get bigger and better, but the smaller steps have already been made
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have a LOT of favorite places to go! When my friends visit I’m definitely taking them out to make memories! Considering I bartend 12-14 hour shifts on Fridays and Sundays, I do not go out those days. The most chill hookah lounge is House of Hookah. I go there with my computer and get work done. My favorite foods spots cant even all fit on a page! Atlanta has so many good food spots. My favorite places are Toast on Lenox, Spice House (buckhead and 14th St), Divan, they gotta go to The Goodz, Breakfast at Barneys, and Agave. For a good time and good food, Blaqhaus, Zari, and Copper Cove are at the top of my list. If I’m hungry at 3am im going to Goodfellas. We definitely are NOT missing Rnb night at Smokehouse! I like to hike and they gotta go even if they dont want to. My favorite hiking spots are Arabia Mountain and Sweetwater Creek. The Botanical Gardens is where ill take them for a day to relax. Lake Lanier for a more fun, water sports day.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’ s not just one person that I can dedicate my shoutout to but of course my mom takes this shoutout. She motivates me, always there to help even from afar, and she gets things done! She knows I try to do more than I can handle at times and she’s the constant preacher in my ear letting me know everything will always work out.
