We had the good fortune of connecting with Jayanna Matthews and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jayanna, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
“Hustle and heart will set you apart.”

There are so many businesses, big and small that people can buy their products from, but my JayShea family continue to support me. Repeat customers, to me, is one of the most humbling experiences as a small business owner. One of the things that I feel makes JayShea different is that customer service is more important to me than how many orders I fill. I will always make sure that my customers are 100% satisfied with their experience, and if they aren’t, I reach out and do whatever I can to remedy that situation. It is not always easy, but it is something that is important to me, and something that I will continue to stand for.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a stay at home, homeschooling mama of four girls. Financially, I needed a way to cut my spending and add supplemental income to my household. While being a small business owner is a journey, I try to keep sight of my “why”. Being home with my girls and trying to fulfill a need that others like me may have. That of having access to safe hair products for our little ones and ourselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
North Carolina is such a beautiful state, so I would definitely suggest places where we could take advantage of the beautiful trees and mountains. South Mountain State Park is in my opinion a “must see” for any nature lover. The views are beautiful. One of my favorite places to just chill is Veronet Vineyards. As far as food and drinks, Leroy Fox, Uptown Charlotte is my favorite place.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am a firm believer in having a strong village in your corner and I am so grateful to have just that. When I first started my business, it was because I had a personal need. I have daughters with different hair textures, and I was spending way too much on different products. I began researching and making natural products that I could use for myself and my girls when my family and my bestie encouraged me to sell my products.

When it came to starting a business, I was clueless. My sister-in-law, who is also an entrepreneur, was of great assistance in guiding me through that journey. My sister and my mother always encourage me to keep going. They were, and still are my personal hype squad. And my brother-in-law built and launched my website.

My husband stayed up with me on countless occasions testing products, providing feedback, and helping me pack orders. And of course, my sweet girls who are my product testers and hair models.

I am surrounded by hard working business owners who just happen to love me and want me to succeed, whatever that may look like for me. That kind of support is invaluable.

Then there are my customers, my JayShea family. Sometimes I am in disbelief that these wonderful people who could shop anywhere choose to shop with me. I am very thankful for them.
