We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Martino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jay, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is God. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Believing in him and his timing is what got me where I am. Keeping my faith and leaning not on my own understanding is the reason for my success.

What should our readers know about your business?
A while ago, I was thinking of ways to set myself apart. It seemed like everyone in my field of barbering and content creating were doing the same thing. I quickly had to find a way to stand out from the competition. As far as barbering , giving a grooming service rather just a haircut is what took me to that next level. By grooming service, I’m talking shampooing, conditioning, straight razor, hot towel etc. What I provide is much more than just the traditional 15 minute in and out haircut. With tiktok, everybody was doing trendy dance etc, so I found my niche with day in my life videos. I grew my audience with that and it’s been working ever since.

Betting on myself is how I got to where I am today business wise. I can write a whole book about it but long story short, this is what it came down too. I had the passion to be a barber since I was 3 years old, but started taking it serious when I was 13 years old. From 13 years old to now, there has been numerous times to where I’ve been told by the ones closest to me to keep this as a hobby, it’s not a real career, you can’t survive off of being a barber etc. And now that I look back on it, if I were to listen to those naysayers, I wouldn’t have accomplished so much. Here’s a list of my accomplishments.

– Licensed Barber in SC
– Licensed Master Barber in GA
– Barber/Barbershop of the year nominee
– Barbershop owner
– Numerous magazine features
– Cut a celebrity
These are just a few of my accomplishments.

Moral of the story, don’t let anyone distract you or knock you off your own path to success. The ones that you think love and should support you the most, will be the same ones asking for discounts once those strangers get you to a point where your business is being successful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First we would get breakfast at any black owned spot in the city, go shopping at lenox mall, eat lunch at another black owned spot, go to atlantic station, eat at another black owned restaurant for dinner and finish our night out chilling at a bar and lounge for good vibes.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My barber mentors and instructor definitely played a role in my success. From teaching me the ins and out about the barbering industry really helped me level up and get to that next level.
