We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The single most important factor behind my success is my determination not to give up. I’ve had tons of doors closed only to allow room for better opportunities. Not being discouraged is imperative. I am fully aware that life happens and it’s not about what happens but how we respond to what happens.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a licensed therapist and life coach, originally from Detroit, MI, currently residing outside of Raleigh, NC. I’m a proud graduate of the University of Michigan School of Social Work and I’ve been practicing in the mental health field for over 10 years. During my career I have been blessed to gain tons of experience working with different populations. This experience allows me to set myself apart from my colleagues and better show up for the clients I serve.

Initially I began my career in addiction and substance use, then transitioned to hospice social work and providing outpatient grief counseling. Throughout both of those endeavors, I became aware that trauma is often an underlying culprit when dealing with grief and loss as well as substance abuse.

Additionally, I’ve had the pleasure of counseling college students at my alma mater, working with Veterans and Active Duty Soldiers, and finally community mental health and inpatient psychiatric units – I’ve worked in just about most areas with the exception of the prison system. My experience has afforded me the opportunity to teach at the graduate level, promote to leadership positions early in my career, and thrive in the above positions because of my laid back personality and adaptability. Yet and still, I strive to further my knowledge through seeking supervision and being aware that helping others is a journey not a destination.

What are you most proud of or excited about?

I’m most proud of my ability to go the extra mile to excel. I remember driving to training monthly out of state to learn from experts in the field of Cognitive Therapy. Despite the training being offered online, I placed higher value on the in-person experience (pre-COVID of course). This particular training helped me secure my previous dream job, which was 1hr30mins away, and I made the commute because I knew long-term it would be beneficial for my career.. The decision was easy, the process was not. More times than not we’re aware of what we need to do, it’s the actual discipline of completing the task that discourages us.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?

Don’t try to make everyone happy. In your career, there will be competing goal and priorities. You may have the goals for yourself in your career, the agency’s goals, and then the client’s goals. Focus on what you need to be the best therapist, coach, professional, that you can be before you attempt to pour into others.
What do you want the world to know about your brand and story?

Peace & Prosperity Coaching represents being at peace and attracting prosperity, and in order to do so we must know what that means and looks like. We define our own success. Worrying about what works for others is the fastest way to make no progress. Be your own person and you can create your own peace.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?

The first stop would be Thumbs Up for breakfast. I’ve had the best breakfast at any of their locations and then we’d walk the meal off in Piedmont Park. We would be sure to grab lunch at Tassili’s, can’t go for dinner because the line is too long! We would end the night with Top Golf and possibly Soul Vegetarian.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to my wife Dr. Karryll Phillips. I appreciate all of her support, love, and encouragement throughout my career. Having a supportive wife makes a difference during the long nights and time spent away from family to focus on your purpose. I truly thank her for being someone I can count on whether things are going really well or on the most difficult days. Thank you babe!
