We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Hill-Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jasmine, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Balance is actually something I’m seeking right now in business when it comes to having self care days and work days. I’m currently working on not over working myself and giving myself grace in order to function correctly. At one point, I use to think balance was a myth but giving yourself some type of daily agenda can help tremendously.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I created a luxury accessories brand Velz Monroe in 2012 that started as wholesale and resell business. I was able to study the market and pivot when COVID hit. I loved everything about accessories. I believe it brings your outfit to life. I also used my brand to become an accessory stylist where I showed that accessories can elevate your look without doing too much.

Currently, I am in the middle of expanding the brand to be much more than just accessories but I have to make sure I include my humble beginnings. I started this brand at 18 with only knowledge on the legal part of business. Throughout the years, it was trial and error. I networked a lot but then after networking with some of the wrong people while grieving my dad, I isolated myself. Trust issues in business can hender the growth of your business. I had to learn how important is use discernment in business.

There are days when I feel as though I should be further but those days I am focusing too much on the past, allowing comparison to steal my joy and and/or procrastinating. When thoughts like that slip into my mind, I have to start writing things down and creating some type of structure. I’ll turn on music, listen to a sermon/podcast, take a bath, or go for a walk to just clear my mind.

One thing I want everyone to understand about me is that my brain allows me to get creative thoughts from just looking at a word, watching one scene in a show, or staring at the ocean. I can take a look at your brand and give to you a strategic plan on how to expand it. This is why I am not limiting Velz Monroe to just accessories because there’ is so much more to be done with my brand.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a homebody and do not get out much. So we will basically explore the town together.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I will love to give credit to my late father who always showed up for me and supported me from the very beginning.
