We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaslyn Tate and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jaslyn, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve been an artist all my life. Since elementary I have been in Talented Art. Throughout grade school, I entered many art competitions and have been awarded many opportunities through doing so. At some point I thought I wanted to pursue Nursing but that thought didn’t last long. Taking a medical terminology course was the deciding factor. I designed flyers, club T-shirts, and even hand painted run-through signs for the football team. Once I graduated from high school, I decided to pursue a career in Graphic Design. Eventually I earned an apprenticeship and finally decided to try my hand at tattooing. I say finally because for a while it seemed as if that was being pushed on me. Many people around me encouraged me to pick up the “gun” and start tattooing but I was scared. I’d often say “ Oh no, it’s not a piece of paper and pencil we’re talking about.” Although it’s true, I’m so glad that I didn’t stick with that mindset because I wouldn’t be the artist that I am today.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There are so many art forms and styles that I’m inspired by. However, Henna, mandalas, geometric, and floral will always be my favorites.I enjoy abstract art as well. I am most proud of the work I don’t plan, but have free range to express myself on live canvas. I’d say I most practice floral and henna style tattoos. My journey has not been smooth sailing. A lot of sacrifices were made to get to where I am today. Often times I held my self back by not deciding to move forward. I have always strived to be the most professional and positive person I could be, even when I felt I had no reason to. Even after being disrespected, disregarded, belittled, I laughed or smiled because I didn’t want to cause conflict. I have such a clear vision of what I want to achieve in this life and I refuse to stop until I see that vision as reality. Sometimes that means traveling on my journey alone and growing my faith just a little more. It gets hard at times but I try my best not to be discouraged by anything that doesn’t contribute to my success. I get through my toughest times by praying and working hard because I know that if I do all I can for myself and trust God to handle the rest, He will bless me with all my heart’s desires. One lesson I’ve learned is to never be afraid to express yourself even when you feel the response may bring discomfort to you or others. Another is to never let anyone take advantage of you no matter what position they’re in or what their status is. Everyone is a big deal! I suffered from lack of confidence and self-doubt. Believing in yourself and being consistent is key. I’m still learning and growing daily but I just want everyone who experiences me to know that I take myself and my business seriously so I expect them to do the same.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I don’t get out to explore much, but when I do get out, I find myself at the same few spots. I enjoy brunch at Cafe Intermezzo. The vibe is warm and inviting, they have good eats, and let’s not forget that cheesecake that melts in your mouth. Speaking of dessert, Big Easy snowballs is a place I find myself at often. This frozen treat is pretty big where I’m from and I couldn’t be happier that I get a taste of home away from home. I enjoy being outdoors as well. Hiking Stone Mountain is a fun experience. If you need to clear your mind, it is the perfect spot to do so. Another one of my favorite places to be is the High Museum. Each exhibit I have had the pleasure of attending has been mind blowing. They showcase artist’s work from all over and shed light on many things happening around us and inside of us everyday. I highly suggest visiting if you’re ever in Midtown Atlanta. I hope to soon experience way more of what the city has to offer.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m a proud member of a female networking organization called Gurl 2 Girl. Maliyah Mayfield is the founder and one of the most beautiful and genuine souls I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with. In no time she has shined her light and afforded many female entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase their businesses to the world and gain more customers/clientele. She has both collaborated and curated events to bring recognition to our hard working lady bosses. The way she presents herself and her business along with this amazing organization speaks volumes. I am honored to be apart of this group of women and even more so to work alongside Maliyah and witness her hard work and dedication towards success.
