We had the good fortune of connecting with Japan Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Japan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After working for a big recording label in NYC, and getting experience in the music biz, I wanted to blend my love for music and travel by bringing an international sound to the Atlanta community.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Dorado Worldwide started from throwing small scale events in Atlanta and NYC. I have a pretty wide pallet so I would always encourage dj’s to source music from London, South Africa, latin America….etc. I love when people discover sounds they’ve never hear of before. It’s like carving out an International community and traveling with your friends to these different places without leaving ATL. There isn’t a black perspective of House and EDM music in Atl, and I’ve carved out that space for “festival style” events that allows for self-expression in safe space, that is truly inclusive.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am a member of the Castleberry Hill community, there are a lot of hidden gems here. Art galleries, my fav is Maya Bailey’s gallery. There is usually an event happening at Agenda Studios, and if you want to buy local fashion; check out Closette by Fani. There are some really cool pop-up events and concerts always happening in Atlanta. If you are into music, I would check out Bamba Tuesdays at Rock Steady, or Mash up night on Sundays there by Dj Unruley. I would check out what events are happening in the Underground (There is always something cool happening there, like boiler room events, or Everydayppl).
Atlanta is a major concert hub, may favorite concert venue is the Tabernacle.
MJQ is “good ole faithful” for dancing, District on Fridays is perfect for tech house. If you make it on the first Friday of the month please check out Frequency Friday’s at the High Museum. My hidden gym for Chicago house is at parlor when Dj Kemit or DJ Salah is spinning.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve learned a lot and was able to envision Dorado Worldwide based off the success of events like Everydayppl, GhettoGothic, 40z bounce, and my friends doing an amazing job at MilkandCookies. I’ve had plenty of mentorship from the creators of these events. They’ve all had a strong footing in the culture and music scene and complete changed my perspective on why we dance and gather.
It also challenged me to carve out my niche, which is bringing all aspects of Dance music to forefront. Although black and POC’s historically are the creators of house and electronic music, there has been issues with Black people and POC’s receiving recognition in the past decade. Most large scale festivals and big budgeted EDM labels have not made it a priority to be inclusive and I want to change that. Those who attend my events, or listen to my dj’s feel that diversity again. Dance music is for all, and everyone should have a place in the ecosystem.
