Meet Janlatae Mullins | Writer, Director & Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Janlatae Mullins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janlatae, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The Heart. Heart is what connects people. Heart is what makes people feel alive-alive to others, things, the world and to your art. When you connect with people in that way, you leave an invaluable footprint on their soul and it propels them to make choices that could ultimately change their lives and the world. And joy. That’s an invaluable asset that everyone can bring with them. Choose joy even in the darkest of circumstances. As an artist, knowing your purpose and using it in these ways can make you unstoppable- and just what people need.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started off believing at 9 that I could change the world. Dancing in the bathroom mirror to Michael Jackson as he sang “Man in the Mirror” on the Grammy’s, I knew I had to “make that change.” As a filmmaker and writer, music has always inspired me. Creating moments visually out of another art form that I have no idea how to do was always intriguing to me. Music moves my soul. I like to create films that really challenge the heart, really challenge the status quo, that really challenges us to dig deeper and hold tighter. For me, there is no greater feeling than seeing hope and faith rise in people’s voices, eyes and soul when they’ve experienced a piece of art that’s touched them; that they’ve seen God in. I always go for the moments. Whether in a dance number, action film, comedy or drama, what’s the moment that connects us as humans? I like to go after that. I hope in some way to create work that inspires people to change and other artists to run after their purpose; to run after their God moments. Sometimes it gets hard. Sometimes it’s hard to stay bright in dark tunnels, but it’s the brightness inside of you that provides the flashlight for others. So keep shining y’know? That’s how I stay committed to create. Be the light so others can see and shine with you. The world needs it. Especially now.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Aside from Atlanta, I like Nashville a lot. The Nashville Underground is a great bar and restaraunt ran by Joey and Gavin DeGraw in Nashville, TN. I love to eat and Atlanta always has great places to go. The Marietta Square is great. They have cool and friendly restaraunts, ice cream spots, etc. My fave place to go in the Square is Cool Beans Coffee Roasters. They have the BEST coffee. And then of course hiking is always great. I love walking trails. The older that I get, the more I want to be outside and enjoy good people, solitude and fresh air. And then of course we would take in a movie or two with popcorn. I like movie marathons. And then as always I love my family. Always great spending time with them.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All the people in community that have believed in me early on until now. I’ve always been fortunate enough to have so many supporters and collaborators. I don’t think I would be where I am without them and their encouragement as well as inspiration. Also Jesus. Big time.
