Meet Jamila Tarisai: Artist, Writter, publisher, Speaker, Editor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamila Tarisai and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamila, what do you want people to remember about you?
I want people to remember that I left this world empty & that means I have done everything that came to my mind to do. That all of my creative ideas came to fruition. That I’ve use every last one of my talents. I’ve written the books & published/edited Magazines I’m a hair and make up artist & I worked on commercial and movie sets. I want people that come behind me to know that every talent that you have whether it’s one or 20 to use them! It doesn’t mean that you will have longevity in every talent but it does mean that everything God has given you you got it out of you, and the earth knows your name.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Iconic bride is the first national size inclusive bridal magazine what that means is we specifically, choose curvier bodies for covers and our shoots to be representative of the woman or female body spectrum. I can’t say it’s been easy because everything has been learning curve from learning how to edit to finding trendy fashion forward bridal selections in curvier sizes To even choosing the correct photographer and or style of photography . it’s been interesting To say the least. One thing I can say is that we need more support from Designers and just from the overall industry. I now understand that advertising dollars pays to keep the magazine in circulation and that’s what one of my main goals is right now. I want to support vendors Around the world so I hope that they see that and can help me do that by advertising with us. I’m most excited about seeing iconic drive in stores like target and it being next to like Martha Stewart weddings that’s the that’s a big goal!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would totally take them to breakfast at Barney’s for brunch and then I will try some of the new restaurants at the works in upper West Midtown a good choice for dinner would be at Sage perimeter or because we all love seafood the Optimus will be great for dinner. And you can’t miss out on Ponce city market that’s just the overall good time for girlfriend bonding! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shout out to black women. From my mother to my sisters to my friends to my colleagues I want to be where I am if it wasn’t for black women.
