We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacob Mallow and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacob, how do you think about risk?
If you’ve taken a finance class, you know that the amount of risk is equatable to the amount of reward. I personally love the idea of risk and the opportunity to be challenged. To me, risk is stepping out of your comfort zone and taking a bold leap of faith. Sometimes, you strike out, but other times, you win big and grow towards whatever you’re trying to accomplish. In my own career as a recording artist, risk has definitely defined some of my early milestones such as landing a great internship in the music business program at UGA, being able to open up at the Georgia Theatre, and successfully funding a kickstarter for my first album this year. If I had never gotten over my fear to ask for help, to ask for opportunity, and to be vulnerable with my own songwriting, I would’ve never had some of the experiences that have shaped me into the more confident artist I am today.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a singer/songwriter at my core. My songs have always started with one instrument (piano or guitar) and the lyrics: then I’ve built from there. Growing up, I was always singing along to the classic rock songs my Dad would play on rides to football practice or just belting different things I heard on the radio. God definitely gifted me with a love to sing and an hear that picked up on complex musical concepts at an early age. I think my voice and style of singing separates me from some of the other artists/bands in town. I love gospel and R&B music, specifically Black female singers who’ve paved the way for modern melismatic vocal technique. I love learning from their natural praise and trying to mimic some of the more ridiculous runs that they’ll sing. It has not been an easy road as a solo artist, but I have an amazing community of friends (most of which who are also musicians) who’ve helped guide me with support along the way, especially through times of not believing in myself. Today, I’m most proud of the record I made this past year and I’m excited to begin rolling in out in May.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family deserves the biggest shoutout in the world. They have loved and supported me from day one, given resources to help me reach certain goals, and have been there to catch me when I’ve stumbled. No one in my family is a musician, but they all take time out of their lives to learn about the process of creating and releasing music in order to better support me. They are wonderful and I wouldn’t be where I’m at now without them. Besides my immediate family, Andrew Blooms deserves a huge shoutout. I interned under Andrew for a year as a junior in college and have grown so much from being in his presence and watching him live his life. It really goes so much deeper than music. Andrew was one of the first males in my life to show me a true picture of Jesus and I could never thank him enough for the love he’s given and the opportunities he’s offered to me. He gives to all those around him, it’s just who he is. He’s taught me about music, performing, friendship, culture, and even different foods that he grew up with. All around, he’s an amazingly talented artist, producer and just a damn good friend. He’s got my utmost respect and I’ll have his back for as long as I live.
