We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackie Hellesoe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jackie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Taking risks is something I’ve always done throughout my life. Especially when it comes to chasing after my passions. I won’t lie, there have been plenty of times where the thought of being uncomfortable and chasing after a dream scared me. But I always thought to myself.. would I rather be in this known, stagnant stage of my life? Or chase after the unknown that can lead me to a prospering, known peace? I think too often we are afraid to fail or too worried about what other people think. Who cares! At the end of the day, YOU are what matters. No one is going to hand you your success except for YOU. I always keep this quote close to my heart, “The Richest Place On Earth Is The Graveyard.” So many dreams.. ideas.. and more are buried 6 feet under because these brilliant individuals were too afraid to pursue what they wanted. I want to die empty because I gave this life all I got!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art comes from my past experiences.. what’s crazy about it is that it mostly comes from my past traumas. I grew up being bullied in elementary & middle school. The only outlet I had was drawing, painting, and coloring… I guess that’s how I got into the whole makeup side of life! My pain became my power and it became my way of letting my emotions out. I feel like that’s what makes me different from others.. Most people are ashamed of a bad past.. but for me, it’s something I embrace because I know there’s something out there who needs someone transparent like me. Transparency can lead to somebody else’s transformation. So far I’m most proud of the experience I had with being chosen to do B. Simone’s makeup for her cosmetic line, “B Simone Beauty.” It’s crazy bc I got a random DM while I was on the way to a baseball game.. it was from some guy from Miami who asked me if I was interested in doing celebrity makeup. I thought it was a scam but long story short.. it was Cardi B’s makeup artist brother who MANAGES her! I was shooketh & of course I told him yes! He told me he was going to show my work first to his client & see if they approve it. 10 minutes after that, he tells me his clients want me as her artist & sends me B Simone’s Instagram page. I was so happy & cried on the inside lol It made me realize all the hard work I put into my craft finally paid off & gets noticed from other people around the world! Professionally I got to where I am today because I kept going even though I wanted to stop.. Which actually led to me literally delete everything (my instagram.. Youtube videos.. etc) & giving up on makeup for a year! That was probably the biggest challenge in my entire life. I went through a very tough time in my life mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.. but while I was in the pit of Hell that year.. I repented to God and prayed, and prayed, and cried so many tears.. I asked God to help me get out of this darkness & he took my hands and took me out from the pits of Hell.. He saved me from the demons inside me & changed my life forever! I’ve never had so much peace, & now I’m back to doing what I love.. makeup, fashion, loving myself, my family & friends, and most of all, him. I hope my story inspires someone out there that whatever pain you’re going through.. don’t give up because God has you. Healing is a JOURNEY, not a destination! And always remember there’s only ONE OF YOU! There will never be another you so don’t compare yourself to anybody else!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well first, I would take my best friend to this park I always going running at near my old place. It’s somewhere in the Jonesboro/Stockbridge area! There’s this beautiful lake and a bridge you can just sit down near, and reflect on life.. I think we all need that one place we can just be in our own thoughts and sort through some things. Hm… I’d probably take her to eat this place called “Sweet Hut.” It’s this amazing bakery shop that has all kinds of foodies inside! I go to the Dorvaville location and it’s sooo good. Definitely a great place to check out if you want something small but fulfilling! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I give all praise to God. If it weren’t for him, I don’t know where I’d be at in my life today. I receive all my wisdom, strength, and ideas from him. I never used to be this spiritually in tune with myself till my uncle passed away a few months ago. He was one of the only members in my family who supported my makeup career since I’ve started. He was a man of God and always showed through his actions what it truly means to live as a child of God. So thank you as well Uncle Siope for sharing your light with me & this world.
