We had the good fortune of connecting with J. Foster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi J. Foster, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue a creative career because it’s what always felt right. Being creative was something that always came natural, I didn’t have to force it. I feel my purpose is tied to being creative. It’s only right I use my gifts to strive for something bigger then me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I channel that passion, emotion, and energy from 90s R&B in my music. I want the listener to feel what I feel when they listen to my music. It’s important to maintain the essence of what makes 90s R&B music so great but not sounding dated either. I think what sets my style apart is that my sound isn’t like the current state of R&B. I’m singing over 808s but still singing with that same 90s R&B flare. Naturally I stand out because it gives off a vintage R&B sound.

I’m most proud of my song “Love You Anyway” being placed on the TV show “Nashville” and my song “Blessings” being added to Chicago station Vocalo Radio. The journey to where I am now was not easy. It took perseverance, faith, and hard work to get to where I am now. I still have so much more to accomplish and plan to do so in 2024.

I’ve learned that the best songs come from real life situations. If you’re lacking inspiration go live life some more. Don’t over think the process, just write what you feel and let the rest happen. Advice I would give is to listen to as much music in your genre as possible. You can gain a lot of inspiration and ideas by listening to other artists. It’s a great way to keep your pulse on where the industry is heading too. Also, collaboration is key, get around other writers that you can study and learn from.

I want the world to know that my goal is to spread love and fun through my music. I hope my brand and what I represent is bigger then me and the music. I want to inspire people to be them best selves and to always spread love. I’ve got a new single set to be released in Spring 2024, so stay tuned!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Being based in LA now, there’s tons to see and do. For starters hitting the beach is a must, most likely check out Malibu beach and maybe Venice beach as well. To grab a drink and vibe we’re definitely checking out spots like Normandie Club, Highlight Reel, and Apt 200. For food we have to visit Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles and Los5puntos. It’s only right you throw in a few LA classics like Universal Studios, the Walk of Fame, and a hike at the Griffith Observatory.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a huge thanks to Vianca Mireya who helped make this all happen. It’s been a pleasure working with her, she’s been very supportive and impactful to my career. Of course also gotta give it up to God, he’s been helping me shape my story for a long time.
