We had the good fortune of connecting with Greylen Hurd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Greylen, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The process of starting the business was simple, I just woke up and said hey I’m going to start a clothing brand and it’s basically just going to be pieces I wish I had in my closet, but I’m going to allow people to buy whatever we come up with. It really felt like second nature for me, this really started out and is still a passion project. It just happens to be a plus that I + Jeff just have good business acumen due to other ventures so it works.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Honestly, what set’s me apart and what makes this brand work is I always want to operate and do things at a high level of excellence. I hate mid anything so I stay from that. This Brand is really a passion project that is something done on the side, but no one would be able to tell because I treat it like it’s what I use to feed my family. I feel like whatever you venture into you should treat it like that. Do it to the best of your ability or just leave it alone.
What also sets me apart is I don’t stop at obstacles and figure out how to use things that would usually work at someone else’s disadvantage, to my advantage. For example, I have ADHD and I see a lot of people complain about having ADHD, but I just keep myself busy and it helps me. I’ve had 3 + jobs at once since high school, and still do now I work in cybersecurity, invest in real estate, work with Audiomack in their artist acquisition department, and now have a clothing brand.
Man honestly, most of the fun I have is just simply with friends. I have a very tight-knit friend group so as long as I’m with them I’m having fun. I’m a real relaxed dude so I just like to kick it and laugh with my people. One place I would take someone if they came to charlotte was prices chicken coop because it was a city staple, but they closed it down earlier this year so a lot of my favorite places growing up in charlotte are kind of fading out just due to change. We would be on the west side of uptown for the most part.
If we are in Detroit, I’m talking to you get a pop, hit a coney island and I would take you near 7 miles Hit a dairy queen and get a cotton candy blizzard. That’s a favorite. Probably would hit Revive to get some gear, then hit Truth at night to get some lamb chops and enjoy the club.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
S/O To God + my savior Jesus Christ for always keeping me wrapped in his protection, and always giving me chance after chance after I didn’t deserve one, for everything. S/O to my family for exposing me to different types of people growing up, and making sure I was cultured growing up as a Kid. S/O DETROIT & CHARLOTTE.
Big S/O to everyone that has played a mentorship role in my life or anyone who has inspired me from a style aspect or provided guidance. near or far. Special S/O Kobe Bryant, Nipsey Hussle.
Special S/O My Older Homies Jonathan McLean, Jeffery D Lockhart, Pauly Guwop, + the rest of The Clean Slate family for putting me under the wing as a freshman in college. Them taking me under the wing at that age is a crucial part of this story because I learned so much from a style and life in general aspect. S/O to my Partner Jeff Graham, for standing on business because I don’t do business with anyone and I was very strategic in choosing who to partner with and he has lived to those expectations. S/O to everyone who has helped move the brand forward in any type of way.
Last but not least s/o to myself because it’s me that always goes above and beyond to make sure what needs to get done, gets done. I put in a lot of work, do a lot of research, do a lot of learning, and pay attention + put into action what I learn. Only I have control over that so s/o to me.
