Meet Gigi Chinh | Founder of Bittersweet Cakes & Events

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gigi Chinh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gigi, why did you pursue a creative career?
“No way!” is exactly what my family and friends would have said if you told them I’d become a baker in five years. This career began as a hobby five years ago when I was a bored stay-at-home mom with a six-month-old baby. Little did I know it would grow into what it is today. It all started with baking a cake for a friend’s birthday, which gained popularity over time. Although I was never much of a cake baker, I enjoyed making sweets and cooking. I’ve always been a naturally artistic and creative person who loved planning events. That passion has led me to where I am today, offering our community the cake of your dreams along with event decorating. I truly love all forms of decorating, and I must say, this career truly found me.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I must say, no journey is ever an easy one. One thing I’m most proud of is teaching myself all the skills I’ve gained, mostly by watching YouTube videos. For that, I owe a huge thanks to YouTube for shaping so much of who I am today. I’ve always been an optimistic person, unafraid to take risks. I pour my heart and soul into every cake I create—from mixing the perfect colors to carefully shaping figurines to look exactly as they should. Every small detail speaks volumes about the care and effort behind someone’s work. Even if it takes me 30 minutes just to get the right shade, I’m willing to do it.

There have been countless times I wanted to give up—when a cake was particularly challenging or when creating a figurine I had never tried before felt overwhelming. But I always pushed through and, more often than not, succeeded. And when I didn’t, I learned to accept that it was okay.

I’ll admit, I sometimes stress myself out because I put so much love and care into my work. However, after experiencing a recent bout of anxiety, I’ve learned an important lesson: to take things one step at a time and trust the process. Everything will turn out great in the end—just as it always does.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
What truly paved the way for my success in this journey is, without a doubt, YouTube! Everything I’ve learned came from watching countless videos, so a huge thank you goes out to all the creators who generously shared their knowledge. Sharing what I’ve learned with this community is something I’ve always wanted to do, but with such a busy schedule, managing social content has been a challenge. After all, there’s only so much one person can do alone—until the time comes to build a team.

With the incredible support I’ve gained over the past five years, I’ve been able to expand into event decorating. And I couldn’t do it without my amazing team. They don’t just work for me—they work with me—and I’m so grateful for every hardworking individual who has helped bring my vision to life. Together, we’ve turned a dream into a reality.
