We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabrielle Hickmon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabrielle, do you have a budget? how do you think about personal finances?
Absolutely, though I am new to keeping one. I think about my personal finances and money in general as working in service of my goals, interests, and joy. So I make my lifestyle and spending decisions along those same lines. What’s going to get me closer to my goals? What’s serving my interests? And what can bring me a little bit of joy?

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a writer all my life, but have really stepped into it more the last few years and I’m excited about continuing to grow my craft. I’ve been intentional about doing different types of writing—blog, personal, academic, journalistic, etc.—for different outlets. Figuring out how to get pitches accepted and get my foot in the door at some publications was not easy, but through trial, error, and a lot of research strides have been made. I’ve learned that I should always shoot my shot. It’s not my job to tell myself no. It’s my job to put myself out there, go after what I want, and create space to receive it.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would dedicate this to my family blood and chosen—they all know who they are.
