We had the good fortune of connecting with Flee Kay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Flee, why did you pursue a creative career?
Somewhere between the age of 5 and my Mom’s white 1990- something Toyota Camry; I developed the ability to memorize and recite lyrics without a hitch. Honestly, I can’t recall the first song I fell in love with. It’s as if music was embedded in my DNA prior to me developing any features in my mothers womb. Rap has always just been one of those things that come to me as effortlessly as inhaling and exhaling a breath of fresh air or blinking my eyes. The mere sound of an 808 or hi hat sends my mind into a whirlwind of metaphorical phrases and punchlines that almost literally jump on to the lines of my composition book. With that being said; pursuing a creative career in the artistry of music was a no brainer.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Making myself proud is something that is often in the back of my mind due to being so focused on my next goal. I’m usually so wrapped up in critiquing my progress that I have to remind myself of where I began compared to where I am now. I am most proud of myself for never giving up and keeping my faith when it seems easier to quit. The most exciting aspect of my career is I have yet to see where it is taking me. It’s an unexplainable feeling of knowing my name is being mentioned in rooms I have yet to step foot in. Although my path is a very narrow and difficult road that is less traveled; I wouldn’t have it any other way. The feeling of being overwhelmed in the words of Nipsey Hussle is “just a reminder that I’m demanding more of myself than I ever have.” The solution to overcoming adversity is discipline and reminding myself of who and what I’m doing it for. I’ve learned that everything always comes full circle for the betterment of myself and those around me, even when things don’t go the way I’d like them to. As far as the worlds perception of me, I would simply like to be heard and felt more than I would like to be seen. I want to continue to put words together for those that relate to me to simultaneously heal and help us all. If I can get through it and do it, so can you!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Monday would be a day of leisure and chill activities. We could hit the Atlanta Beltline in the afternoon for a bike ride accompanied by empanadas and margaritas (after we park of course drink responsibly) from a local Taco spot.
Tuesday should be a movie/shopping day at Atlantic Station just to wander around and catch up on each other’s lives.
Wednesday let’s go to Beetlecat for a Lobster Roll and pitcher of spicy Rum Punch. After going home to change into something more comfortable we should go check out a hookah lounge with an outside patio where we can enjoy the music and still hear ourselves enough to chop it up.
Thursday we’d catch up on some of our favorite reality tv shows like “South Central Baddies” and “Bad Boys”. Call over some friends to plays spades (with the jokers) and dominoes. Taboo battles with shots for the losers.
Friday and Saturday we would go to a couple brunch places such as Thumbs Up or Milk & Honey. As long as we can get shrimp & grits and bottomless mimosas I think we’d be good. We partied a lot as kids so the club scene isn’t really our thing unless it has to do with my music for the most part.
Sunday we’d probably be recovering from mimosas while on the way to get more mimosas. Then we’d go to Piedmont Park to relish in the good memories we made during the week before she flew back home.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Over the years of developing not only as an artist but also as an adult; God has blessed me with eye opening experiences and a solid support foundation to help me push through the most trying time periods of my life. My immediate family and childhood friends (extended family) have been there for me in more ways than I can imagine. I am not exempt to the traumatizing life situations that are prevalent in the Black and LGBTQ community that would break the average person. I’m a survivor of sexual abuse, domestic/street violence, and immature decision making. A lot of times we go through lessons in life that only God, accountability and self awareness can get us out of. The outbreak of Covid 19 with the addition of a gruesome hand injury also forced me to sit down and get to know myself through reading, affirmations, and prayer. The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz is the first book I decided to read that altered my overall perspective of life by allowing me to see that things don’t happen TO me, but FOR me.
